18 Confusing Things Donald Trump Has Said About Health Care:- During the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump railed against \u201cfailing\u201d Obamacare and said he would replace it with \u201csomething terrific\u201d once in office. He\u2019s pushed Congress hard to overhaul a law that he says is \u201ccollapsing\u201d and hurting American families.<\/span><\/p>\n

But it\u2019s never been clear just what, exactly, Trump had in mind. He\u2019s praised single-payer systems in Canada and Scotland and said that Australia\u2019s government-run approach produces \u201cbetter health care than we do.\u201d And now, as Republicans\u2019 efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act seem destined to fall short, some critics are blaming his failure to lay out a clear vision for the defeat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Part of the problem, Republican lawmakers have grumbled privately to reporters, is that the president seems to have a thin grasp on the substance of health care. Some outlets have even reported that during the campaign, he often confused Medicaid with Medicare.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Trump bragged to the New York Times, \u201cI know a lot about health care.\u201d But he demonstrated just how thin that knowledge is as he struggled to describe the difficulty of enacting reform. \u201cSo pre-existing conditions are a tough deal,\u201d he said, in comments that puzzled health-care wonks. \u201cBecause you are basically saying from the moment the insurance, you\u2019re 21 years old, you start working and you\u2019re paying $12 a year for insurance, and by the time you\u2019re 70, you get a nice plan. Here\u2019s something where you walk up and say, \u2018I want my insurance.\u2019 It\u2019s a very tough deal, but it is something that we\u2019re doing a good job of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

So, what does Trump really think about health care? Judging from his circuitous, contradictory, and downright confusing comments over the years, it\u2019s not clear even he knows the answer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you can\u2019t take care of your sick in the country, forget it, it\u2019s all over. I mean, it\u2019s no good. So I\u2019m very liberal when it comes to health care. I believe in universal health care. I believe in whatever it takes to make people well and better.\u201d\u2014Larry King Live, 1999<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican. And I\u2019m not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid.\u201d\u2014The Daily Signal, May 21, 2015<\/span><\/p>\n

But we’re going to save so much money on the other side.
