{"id":35451,"date":"2017-07-19T05:19:37","date_gmt":"2017-07-19T05:19:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=35451"},"modified":"2017-07-19T05:19:37","modified_gmt":"2017-07-19T05:19:37","slug":"ibm-misses-revenue-estimates-weighed-down-by-legacy-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/lifestyle\/ibm-misses-revenue-estimates-weighed-down-by-legacy-businesses.html","title":{"rendered":"IBM misses revenue estimates, weighed down by legacy businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">IBM misses revenue estimates, weighed down by legacy businesses<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">IBM Corp (IBM.N) on Tuesday reported a lower-than-expected quarterly revenue, as growth in its higher-margin businesses that include cloud and artificial intelligence services failed to make up for declines across legacy business segments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">IBM&#8217;s shares fell 3 percent to $149.15 in after-market trading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">Armonk, New York-based IBM has in recent years shifted focus to pockets of growth across its business \u2014 high-margin areas such as cloud, cybersecurity and data analytics \u2014 to counter a slowdown in its hardware and software businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">Revenue from these initiatives, which IBM calls &#8220;strategic imperatives,&#8221; rose 5 percent in the second quarter ended June 30.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">However, some analysts have expressed concern that IBM&#8217;s aggressive investments in areas such as artificial intelligence offering Watson have done little to boost revenue overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">Revenue in IBM&#8217;s technology services and cloud platforms business \u2014 its largest \u2014 fell 5.1 percent to $8.41 billion. Analysts on average had expected $8.58 billion, according to financial data and analytics firm FactSet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">Revenue in other units including software, hardware and consulting services also declined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">Still, IBM backed its forecast for 2017 adjusted earnings of at least $13.80 per share, an expectation some analysts have called too high. Analysts on average expect earnings of $13.68 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I\/B\/E\/S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">IBM will benefit from the launch of its new mainframe server \u2014 seen as key to its cybersecurity initiatives \u2014 as well as new contracts in the second half of 2017, Chief Financial Officer Martin Schroeter said on a conference call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">Schroeter, in an interview, said growth in IBM&#8217;s &#8220;strategic imperatives&#8221; would be back at a 10 percent to 11 percent range by the end of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">IBM&#8217;s total revenue dipped 4.7 percent to $19.29 billion, marking the steepest fall in five quarters. Analysts on average had expected revenue of $19.46 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I\/B\/E\/S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">IBM&#8217;s net income fell nearly 7 percent to $2.33 billion, or $2.48 per share in the second quarter ended June 30.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: 14pt;font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">Excluding items, IBM earned $2.97 per share. Analysts on average had expected adjusted earnings of $2.74 per share.
