The Japanese government says it is taking every measure to ensure people\u2019s safety a day after North Korea test-launched an intercontinental ballistic missile.<\/span><\/p>\n

The missile that North Korea launched Tuesday fell into the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. North Korea later claimed to have successfully tested an ICBM for the first time. U.S. and South Korean officials confirmed it was an ICBM, and Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Wednesday the missile was \u201chighly likely to be an intercontinental ballistic missile.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A successful ICBM test is a momentous advancement of Pyongyang\u2019s work on an arsenal of long-range nuclear-armed missiles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Suga also says Japan is requesting an emergency meeting with China, along with the U.S. and South Korea. He did not elaborate.<\/span><\/p>\n

North Korea is reveling in the condemnation of its first ICBM test, vowing to never give up its missiles or nuclear weapons and to keep sending Washington more \u201cgift packages\u201d of weapons tests.<\/span><\/p>\n

A statement from North Korean state media said that leader Kim Jong Un urged his scientists to \u201cfrequently send big and small \u2018gift packages\u2019 to the Yankees,\u201d an apparent reference to continuing the stream of nuclear and missile tests Kim has ordered since taking power in late 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Korean Central News Agency quoted him as saying the U.S. would be displeased by the \u201cpackage of gifts\u201d delivered on its Independence Day.<\/span><\/p>\n

North Korea test-fired the missile on July 4, the day that America marks its independence.<\/span><\/p>\n

China says it opposes North Korean missile launches that violate U.N. Security Council resolutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters Tuesday that his country was collecting information about North Korea\u2019s latest launch, conducted earlier in the day.<\/span><\/p>\n

North Korea announced that it had tested an intercontinental ballistic missile, though that claim could not be immediately verified. The missile flew about 930 kilometers (580 miles) and fell into the Sea of Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geng said that China urges \u201cthe North Korean side to stop taking actions that violate Security Council resolutions and to create the necessary conditions for the resumption of talks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Suga said the missile landed about 300 kilometers (500 miles) off Oga Peninsula on Japan\u2019s northwestern coast.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters the missile was fired around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday and flew for 40 minutes before landing in the Sea of Japan within waters where Japan claims economic rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said no damage to aircraft or ships has been reported. Japanese media said the coast guard had cautioned ships about potential falling objects.<\/span><\/p>\n

South Korean officials say North Korea launched another ballistic missile in the direction of Japan, part of a string of recent test-firings as the North works to build a nuclear-tipped missile that could reach the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n
