Trump tweets bring new accusations of sexism, bullying<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

President Trump unleashed a wave of new accusations of sexism and cyberbullying on Thursday, with an early morning tweet criticizing MSNBC\u2019s Mika Brzezinski and claiming she was \u201cbleeding\u201d from a \u201cface-lift.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The slam from Trump triggered an almost-instant avalanche of criticism. A slew of GOP lawmakers spoke out against Trump\u2019s online remarks, with House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) calling them not \u201can appropriate comment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

MSNBC decried Thursday\u2019s Trump tweets as a form of \u201cbullying,\u201d saying in a statement, \u201cIt\u2019s a sad day for America when the president spends his time bullying, lying and spewing petty personal attacks instead of doing his job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told Fox News on Thursday that Trump, in fact, is the one who has been bullied.<\/span><\/p>\n

The president, Sanders said to Fox\u2019s Bill Hemmer, \u201cisn\u2019t going to be somebody who is bullied and allowed people \u2014 himself and those around him \u2014 to be personally attacked.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Sanders followed that up with a further defense of Trump at the White House press briefing, where she said that in electing the president, voters had wanted a \u201cfighter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Melania Trump, who announced in the days before the presidential election that she would embark on a children-focused, anti-cyberbullying campaign as first lady, defended her husband\u2019s words through a spokeswoman.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe first lady has stated publicly in the past, when her husband gets attacked, he will punch back 10 times harder,\u201d Stephanie Grisham told CNN in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked if Trump\u2019s tweets were in violation of Twitter\u2019s anti-harassment policy \u2014 which states that users \u201cmay not incite or engage in the targeted abuse or harassment of others\u201d \u2014 a Twitter spokesperson told The Hill, \u201cWe don\u2019t comment on individual accounts, for privacy and security reasons.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark Feldstein, a University of Maryland broadcast journalism professor and former investigative correspondent, called Trump’s \u201cdeliberately crude personal attacks\u201d on Brzezinski in a public forum such as Twitter \u201cunprecedented.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOther presidents, like Richard Nixon, made offensive comments about journalists in private, but none ever intentionally launched such intimately nasty and insulting public broadsides on an individual reporter as these tweets from Trump,\u201d Feldstein, the journalism historian and author of \u201cPoisoning the Press,\u201d about Nixon and the news media, told ITK.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve studied this enough to know that in more than 200 years of often acrimonious relations between presidents and the press, this really does reach a new low of personal vindictiveness to single out and shame a particular reporter in such a public fashion,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the firestorm, several anti-bullying organizations and advocates remained noticeably silent about Trump\u2019s digs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Minnesota-based PACER Center’s National Bullying Prevention Center didn\u2019t immediately respond to ITK\u2019s request for comment. Monica Lewinsky, who has become an outspoken anti-bullying activist, remained mum on the subject on her own Twitter account.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Twitter outburst also led to new accusations of sexism against Trump, who has a long history of off-color remarks about women.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2015, Trump was widely condemned for saying Megyn Kelly, then of Fox News and one of the Republican presidential debate moderators, had \u201cblood coming out of her wherever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump has also referred to NBC News journalist Katy Tur as \u201cLittle Katy\u201d during campaign rallies.<\/span><\/p>\n

His campaign for the White House was nearly torpedoed in October when video surfaced of him talking to an \u201cAccess Hollywood\u201d reporter about grabbing women \u201cby the pussy.\u201d Trump apologized for those comments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Democrats pounced on the president\u2019s latest tweets, with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) saying they were \u201cblatantly sexist \u2014 no question about it.\u201d Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) also referred to Trump\u2019s Thursday tweets as \u201cabsolutely\u201d sexist in an interview with MSNBC.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Democratic National Committee released a statement calling Trump\u2019s \u201cbullying tweets\u201d about Brzezinski an \u201cattack on women everywhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Julie Burton, president of the Women\u2019s Media Center \u2014 a nonprofit progressive women\u2019s media organization \u2014 told ITK in a statement, \u201cPresident Trump has hit a new low in his despicable attacks on journalists and women.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked to weigh in on Trump’s comments, conservative radio host and commentator Laura Ingraham directed ITK to her Thursday morning tweet:<\/span><\/p>\n

The Twitter war also came a day after Trump made headlines when he interrupted a call with Ireland\u2019s new prime minister to compliment the smile of a female correspondent, who was covering the call from the Oval Office.<\/span><\/p>\n

While labeling Trump’s words \u201cmean\u201d and \u201chateful,\u201d a media law expert contended they were unlikely to be considered libelous.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s totally protected opinion,\u201d Clay Calvert, a professor in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida, said Thursday, of Trump commenting on Brzezinski’s I.Q. and calling her \u201ccrazy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cName calling is safeguarded from a libel suit because it’s not factual assertion,\u201d Calvert added.<\/span><\/p>\n
