After running a presidential campaign that, improbably, turned out to be successful, Donald Trump has struggled mightily with the job of actually being president. Considering he entered the Oval Office with no relevant experience, that probably shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise, but his inability to do basically anything his job title entails\u2014and refrain from doing things it doesn\u2019t\u2014has still been magnificent to behold. Health-care legislation? Who knew it could be \u201cso complicated.\u201d Tax reform? We\u2019re still waiting for an update on Steve Mnuchin\u2019s bar-napkin plan. Hiring staff? As of earlier this month, nearly 90 percent of top government positions remained unfilled. Refraining from firing off unhinged tweets endorsing the notion that Barack Obama colluded with Russia; threatening the former director of the F.B.I. with imaginary \u201ctapes\u201d of their conversations; and attacking a retailer for being mean to his adult daughter? Sorry, \u201cPapa Bear\u201d don\u2019t roll like that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the subject areas in which Trump has come off like a delinquent third-grade student has been diplomatic relations. He has continued to trash Mexico and China, of course, but in recent months, a new country has joined this axis of evil: Germany. The deterioration of transatlantic relations seemed to begin in March, when he refused to make eye contact with chancellor Angela Merkel, let alone shake her hand, and Merkel responded by proceeding to fact shame Trump about the U.S.\u2019s trade deals with Germany. The feud escalated again during a meeting with European Union leaders in Brussels, where he reportedly declared German trade policy \u201cevil\u201d before going on to tweet about how \u201cvery bad\u201d our friends in Western Europe truly are.<\/span><\/p>\n

As you might expect, Trump\u2019s repeated aggression hasn\u2019t gone over well in Germany. After the NATO meeting, Merkel and her political rival, German Social Democrat leader Martin Schulz, both said publicly that Europe can no longer rely on old alliances and must unite in response. And at a German conference on Tuesday, after a video feed of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross’s rambling speech criticizing German trade policy was unceremoniously cut off, Merkel took the stage to hit back at the Trump administration in a classically German fashion: with cold, hard facts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that we have 10 times as much direct investment from Germany in the United States than there\u2019s American investment in Germany has, of course . . . a strong effect on the many jobs we create [in the U.S.,]\u201d Merkel said, addressing the Economic Council of the Christian Democratic Union less than two weeks before she is scheduled to confront Trump, once again, at the G20 summit in Hamburg. She added the U.S. \u201cshould also take into account that B.M.W. has its largest production site not in Germany but in the United States . . . and exports more cars from there into third countries than Ford and General Motors combined.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

There was a time when Joshua Newman was just your average Palo Alto High School grad, providing seed capital to start-ups during his junior year at Yale and being featured in the pages of The Wall Street Journal in an article about \u201cdorm-room venture capitalists.\u201d Then he started a production company, went into debt, got bit by the CrossFit bug, founded an independent CrossFit gym in N.Y.C., and glimpsed a fitness-based way out of his financial troubles, albeit an illegal one<\/span><\/p>\n

Last January, Deutsche Bank paid $630 million to settle charges brought by U.S. and British regulators that it had allowed $10 billion to flow out of Russia in a series of \u201cmirror trades\u201d between 2011 and 2015. That stat, plus the fact that the German lender was the only bank that would loan Donald Trump money when no one else on Wall Street would, has raised a lot of eyebrows in Washington, and put the firm in the uncomfortable position of having to tell lawmakers that privacy rules prevent it from disclosing internal information related to the president (a claim that did not go over well with ranking Financial Services Committee member Maxine Waters). Luckily for the bank, on Wednesday it received a slight reprieve when Judge Analisa Torres dismissed a class-action suit by investors accusing the company of \u201cconcealing major deficiencies in its anti-money laundering controls, even as it allowed \u2018mirror trades\u2019 to launder money out of Russia as part of a $10 billion trading scheme.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, the bank doesn\u2019t come off that great. According to Reuters, Torres wrote that while the complaint showed \u201cevidence that the bank’s anti-money laundering and know-your-customer procedures were deficient at identifying the mirror trades, statements concerning the adequacy of the bank’s internal controls are not actionable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
