Trump lawyer denies president is a probe target<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Latest on the investigation into Russia\u2019s interference in the election and ties to Trump campaign associates (all times local):<\/span><\/p>\n

9:20 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

A member of President Donald Trump\u2019s outside legal team says the president isn\u2019t under federal investigation. The statement comes even though Trump himself has suggested that he is.<\/span><\/p>\n

The attorney, Jay Sekulow, appeared on several Sunday news programs to counter the impression that Trump has acknowledged he\u2019s become a target of the expanding Russia probe.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, Trump sent a tweet referring to being the victim of a \u201cwitch hunt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But Sekulow said repeatedly Sunday that \u201cthe president has not been and is not under investigation.\u201d He says the Trump tweet was specifically directed at a story in The Washington Post about the expanding probe into Russia\u2019s election meddling.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sekulow says that Trump hasn\u2019t been notified of any investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sen. Marco Rubio says it\u2019s best for the country to let the FBI\u2019s investigation into Russia meddling in the 2016 presidential election take its course, and the Florida Republican tells CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union\u201d that\u2019s what he\u2019d advise President Donald Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rubio says Trump firing former FBI Director James Comey hasn\u2019t impeded the FBI\u2019s or the Senate intelligence committee\u2019s investigations into Russia\u2019s role in the 2016 campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rubio says: \u201cIf it involved working with Americans, whether wittingly or unwittingly, that needs to be part of\u201d the investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump insists his campaign had nothing to do with Russian efforts to undermine credibility in the U.S. election. Rubio says it\u2019s important for the American people to know how the Russians interfered because we have more elections coming up.<\/span><\/p>\n

10:30 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

The top Democrat on the House intelligence committee says the panel is looking forward to getting a response from the White House this week as to whether President Donald Trump has tapes of private conversations with fired FBI Director James Comey.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rep. Adam Schiff says he wants the White House to acknowledge the tapes or make clear there are no tapes and \u201cit was an idle threat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The panel sent a bipartisan letter this month to White House counsel Don McGahn seeking an answer by this Friday. The committee also sent a letter to Comey asking for any notes or memos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Schiff says if the panel can\u2019t get an answer then he believes a subpoena will be needed.<\/span><\/p>\n

He spoke on ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press\u201d Sunday, attorney Jay Sekulow said the \u201cpresident is not under investigation by the special counsel.\u201d He said Trump\u2019s statement on Twitter Friday was specifically in response to a story in The Washington Post about the expanding probe into Russia\u2019s election meddling.<\/span><\/p>\n

The president wrote on Twitter: \u201cI am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt.\u201d The message apparently referred to Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general whose role leading the federal investigation has become increasingly complicated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sekulow said Trump \u201cis not and has not been under investigation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

7:40 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

President Donald Trump is beginning his day with a stream of tweets defending his record and lashing out at the investigation into Russian interference in the election.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a two-part tweet posted before 7 a.m. Sunday, Trump wrote: \u201cThe MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN agenda is doing very well despite the distraction of the Witch Hunt.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He continued by saying: \u201cMany new jobs, high business enthusiasm …massive regulation cuts, 36 new legislative bills signed, great new S.C.Justice, and Infrastructure, Healthcare and Tax Cuts in works!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWitch hunt\u2019 is how Trump characterizes the probe into Russia\u2019s election interference and possible ties to his campaign associates.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump advisers describe the president as increasingly angry over the investigation, yelling at television sets carrying coverage and insisting he is the target of a conspiracy.<\/span><\/p>\n
