At times hecklers drowned out her remarks.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Perhaps foreseeing the resistance she&#39;d face during her speech, DeVos told the crowd, &quot;While we will undoubtedly disagree at times I hope we can do so respectfully. Let&#39;s choose to hear one another out. He told CNN he didn&#39;t know why he was removed.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">&quot;I&#39;m standing with my seniors, man. No one likes her, man. General said she was honored that someone &quot;would consider my story to be deemed worthy enough to be mentioned during graduation as a success story, not to give up.&quot;<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">General, 27, of West Palm Beach, Florida, enrolled at Bethune-Cookman at age 24. She credited her family, and mentors who encouraged her and &quot;kept me in their prayers.&quot; A mass communications graduate, she will attend Howard University and pursue a graduate degree in transformational leadership, she said.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">&quot;I know that she understood where I was coming from and she understood the legacy that was behind my story,&quot; General said of DeVos.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">&#39;Real pioneers&#39; remark follows DeVos<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Before DeVos&#39; address, several students told CNN there was no place for her at commencement, and they were miffed they didn&#39;t have more say in picking a graduation speaker.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">A primary reason for protesting her appearance &#8212; and for petitioning school officials to cancel her address &#8212; is her now-recanted statement that founders of historically black colleges and universities were &quot;real pioneers&quot; of school choice.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">HBCUs, of course, were founded during segregation, when black students were barred from attending white colleges in the South and beyond. Your job is to be committed to academia and know exactly what you&#39;re talking about &#8230; what context you&#39;re saying it in,&quot; said 1996 graduate Fedrick Ingram, vice president of the Florida Education Association.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Asked if too much was made of her statement, he emphatically said no, calling her remark &quot;blatant ignorance.&quot;<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Peaceful protests against DeVos&#39; appearance began last week, with demonstrators holding placards that read &quot;DeVos No&quot; and &quot;Our tax $s pay for public education.&quot; The NAACP Florida State Conference has urged the university president and board chairman to step down.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">NAACP president Cornell Brooks weighed in on the DeVos protests on Wednesday.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">&quot;The students booing and some cheering is a reflection of their concern about the policies of the department of education,&quot; Brooks told CNN on &quot;Erin Burnett OutFront.&quot; So let&#39;s be clear about this, the issue here is not the civility of the students but rather the policy of the secretary.&quot;<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Brooks emphasized students were exercising &quot;their First Amendment right to boo.&quot;<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">&quot;The issue here is what happens after the speech,&quot; Brooks said. &quot;And with respect to that, the secretary and this Department of Education does not have a set of policies to ensure that HBCUs continue to survive and serve generations of students going into the future. And so that&#39;s what the students were protesting.&quot;<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">On Tuesday, Dominic Whitehead, a 2010 graduate, led a group that delivered what he said was about 60,000 signatures asking the university to stop her speech.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">A university official, who asked not to be named because he didn&#39;t want to steal the spotlight from the university&#39;s president, said 6,000 of the petitions were properly filled out, and of those, the majority came from outside the campus and Daytona Beach.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">DeVos&#39; detractors charge that the education secretary has reduced consumer protections for student loan repayment plans and amnesty programs, something many Bethune-Cookman students depend upon. They&#39;re also opposed to her past negative remarks on public education, of which many Bethune-Cookman students are products.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Student turns back on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BetsyDeVos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@BetsyDeVos<\/a> when her name is announced. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZuYcr15NOg\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/ZuYcr15NOg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Nick Valencia (@CNNValencia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNNValencia\/status\/862349465822388225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 10, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">President Donald Trump over the weekend issued a statement saying, &quot;Secretary DeVos chose an HBCU as the venue for her first commencement address to demonstrate my administration&#39;s dedication to these great institutions of higher learning.&quot;<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">&#39;They&#39;re both female&#39;<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Junior Jasmine Smith, who helped deliver petitions to university leadership, said she felt DeVos was an inappropriate choice for her school&#39;s spring commencement, simply because there&#39;s so little common ground between her and the students she was to address.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">&quot;I believe (graduates) deserve a speaker who could relate to them as far as the struggle we go through within the education system, and I feel like she cannot relate in that aspect,&quot; Smith said.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Asked about a university news release that compared DeVos to the school&#39;s founder &#8212; saying they both appreciated &quot;the importance of opportunity and hope for students to receive an exceptional education experience&quot; &#8212; Smith smirked.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">&quot;Similar qualities &#8212; they&#39;re both female, but that&#39;s pretty much all I can think of,&quot; she said.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Free speech under attack?<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Students and graduates denied their opposition to DeVos was infringing on the First Amendment. This isn&#39;t about the free exchange of ideas, they said.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">&quot;I&#39;m all for building bridges, and I welcome Secretary DeVos to meet me and more undergraduate students &#8230; but not at a commencement speech where it&#39;s so one-sided,&quot; Smith said.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Added Ingram, &quot;If you want to have free speech, if you want to have a dialogue, if you want to learn, this is not the place for that.
