Journalists wearing black T-shirts bearing &quot;Fair go, Fairfax&quot; stood outside the company&#39;s Australian offices, while other employees protested outside a Sydney hotel where Fairfax&#39;s Chief Executive Greg Hywood defended the job cuts at an industry conference. Hywood said editions of Australia&#39;s oldest continuously printed newspapers would continue even though the strike is expected to see many of Fairfax&#39;s most experienced journalists absent for Australia&#39;s federal budget, a centerpiece event of Australian media companies.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">To fill the void during the strike, the company has sought assistance from other Fairfax employees, contractors and agencies for news coverage.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&quot;It is the not first time we have faced industrial action,&quot; Hywood said as he addressed a Macquarie Group conference.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&quot;We won&#39;t be dissuaded from making the right decisions. &quot;Fairfax imposed a round of job cuts earlier this year when it scaled back news coverage, focusing more on politics, entertainment and crime.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Paul Murphy, chief executive of the journalists union Media, Entertainment &amp; Arts Alliance, said the job cuts were unfair when employees helped aid Fairfax&#39;s transition to digital.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:18px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&quot;Through all the challenges, they continued to produce high quality independent journalism.
