{"id":25619,"date":"2017-03-31T09:42:32","date_gmt":"2017-03-31T09:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=25619"},"modified":"2017-03-31T09:42:32","modified_gmt":"2017-03-31T09:42:32","slug":"israel-set-to-approve-first-new-settlement-in-20-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/world-news\/israel-set-to-approve-first-new-settlement-in-20-years.html","title":{"rendered":"Israel set to approve first new settlement in 20 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:22px;\"><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>Israel set to approve first new settlement in 20 years<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>Israel set to approve first new settlement in 20 years:- <\/strong>Israel&rsquo;s government on Thursday appeared set to approve the construction of a new Jewish settlement in the West Bank for the first time in 20 years, despite fierce opposition from Palestinians and a recent request from the White House to hold back on settlement activity.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">The move, which was unanimously approved by the security cabinet and is awaiting a final go-ahead from the wider cabinet, is meant as compensation for the settlement of Amona, which was demolished more than a month ago after Israel&rsquo;s Supreme Court ruled that it was built on land privately owned by Palestinian farmers.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been under pressure at home to uphold his promise to the 40 families evicted from Amona to resettle them on an alternative parcel of land in the West Bank.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">If the plan for the new settlement goes ahead, it would contradict a request by President Trump in February for Israel to &ldquo;hold back&rdquo; on settlements until an understanding is reached between the two governments on the issue.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">A team of Israeli officials, led by Israel&rsquo;s ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer, met last week with Jason Greenblatt, Trump&rsquo;s special representative for international negotiations, to find a solution. The talks, however, ended in a stalemate, with the White House expressing its &ldquo;concerns&rdquo; about settlement construction.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Israel&rsquo;s settler movement has expected Trump to be more supportive of its goals to expand its communities in the West Bank after eight years of restrictions and criticism during the Obama administration.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Greenblatt has expressed the Trump administration&rsquo;s interest in restarting the stalled peace process between the two sides. But a new Israeli settlement could make achieving that goal more difficult.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Greenblatt visited the region earlier this month, meeting with Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">According to Israeli human rights group B&rsquo;Tselem, roughly 125 settlements have been built on land Israel occupied after the 1967 war with Jordan. Israel has continued to build additional housing units inside those settlements over the years.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">There are a further 100 outposts, or small communities, viewed as illegal even by the Israeli government.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Palestinians oppose the existence of Israeli settlements, seeing them as an expansion of Israel into territory they hope will one day be part of a Palestinian state.
