\n\tHow the Mets deal with the Tim Tebow media circus:- Tim Tebow will play in another Grapefruit League game on Friday, whether you like it or not. And he may be bringing the media circus with him once again.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe most polarizing minor leaguer in baseball attracted a large contingent earlier this week when he played in his first big league spring training game. About twice as many media members were on hand to watch Tebow face the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe magnitude of the event was lost on Boston ace Rick Porcello, who is admittedly not much of a college football fan (he said had no rooting interest because Rutgers was never any good when he was growing up in Morristown), and didn't even immediately recognize Tebow, thinking he was a bat boy when he was in the wrong on-deck circle. But when multiple TV stations and the ESPN football crew showed up to First Data Field to do live shots as early as 6 am, it became clear that Tebow still has an ability to make headlines. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tWith Tebow playing again Friday when the Mets host the Houston Astros — and this time in the outfield — the Mets are preparing for the circus to return to town. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t"He's a very prominent figure in the state of Florida and it's a unique situation," pitcher Adam Wilk said. "He's another player. I think if you think that he's got to do this or got to do that, it takes away and distracts you from what you need to do for your work or what the team needs to do."<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tWilk is the same age as Tebow — 29 — and has been in several minor league clubhouses, but never seen the amount of media that he saw Wednesday for any minor leaguer in the past. Clearly, Wilk wasn't distracted by the ordeal, as he pitched one scoreless inning of relief and got the win. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tBut some were in awe of the spectalcle. P.J. Conlon thought he had seen a lot of media at the NCAA baseball tournament in college, when a large contingent showed up at a regional round in Los Angeles to cover Kris Bryant. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tBut that was nothing compared to what he saw on Wednesday, he said. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t"I had never seen anything like it on this kind of scale," Conlon said. "It was crazy."<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tConlon said the key to navigating the madness is to ignore it and continue on like it's a normal day and he's a normal teammate. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe established major leaguers echoed that sentiment. Outfielder Jay Bruce made sure to make himself available for Tebow when he approached him in the dugout looking for advice, and was happy to converse in "ball talk." Second baseman Neil Walker made sure to rib Tebow for the 2011 AFC Wild Card game, chiding him for beating his Pittsburgh Steelers when he was the quarterback for the Denver Broncos. <\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t"Everybody knows the situation. Everybody knows that Tim is here and he's going to get an opportunity to play," Walker said. "And that's great, but I think as players we're all so tuned to be creatures of habit. So we're all focused on getting our work in for the day and playing the game. Not that it adds any more or less than the rest of us, but I'm sure he's excited for his opportunity."<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tTebow said the clubhouse was welcoming and manager Terry Collins praised his professionalism.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tBut there were a few minor leaguers who didn't appear thrilled with the situation. Asking around over the last few days, I received some eye rolls. A few conversations began with "He seems really nice but…" before declining to say more. And none could believe how much media was in town to cover a minor leaguer.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tCan you blame them? No, because Tebow is, in fact, a genuinely nice guy. And they admire his athleticism. But many of them weren't given a signing bonus in the same realm as Tebow's $100K and none of them are getting interviewed on ESPN.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe novelty of Tebow may wear off in his second game, and continue to do so if he plays in more games — especially if he has similar 0-for-3 results. It's highly unlikely that Sal Paolantonio and his camera crew will park himself in the Mets' clubhouse again.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tBut if he does, the Mets are ready to ignore him and the rest of football contingent that comes with their new baseball teammate. <\/span><\/span><\/span>
