She declined to discuss the case further.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Angela Harrington, Berkeley&rsquo;s assistant vice president <\/span><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">for<\/span><span style=\"font-size:18px;\"> communications and external relations, said in an email last week, &ldquo;Berkeley College responded to questions raised by the department in early 2015, and no further activity ensued.&rdquo;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">According to research by the Equality of Opportunity Project, Berkeley&rsquo;s New York State branches rank 45th out of more than 2,000 schools in so-called mobility rate, which measures the percentage of students who came from homes in the <\/span><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">bottom-fifth<\/span><span style=\"font-size:18px;\"> income bracket but reached the top fifth.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Quantifying loan default rates is complicated. The federal Education Department lists so-called cohort loan default rates for colleges, and its most recent data said the rate at Berkeley&rsquo;s New York State campuses was 11.2 percent for the 2013 fiscal year, compared with 11.3 percent nationally. But the department&rsquo;s College Scorecard says the percentage of Berkeley-New York students who have made some form of federal loan repayment within three years of leaving school is 32 percent, compared with 46 percent among all colleges.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Of 10 former Berkeley basketball players interviewed about their experiences at the school and their college debt, <\/span><span style=\"font-size:18px;\">only<\/span><span style=\"font-size:18px;\"> one said he was defaulting.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">For-profit schools like Berkeley typically offer vocational programs in fields like marketing and criminal justice. The median annual family income of Berkeley students is $30,100 &mdash; among the lowest for colleges in New York State, according to an analysis by The Upshot of a study last month on intergenerational income mobility and student outcomes by the Equality of Opportunity Project.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">According to the Department of Education&rsquo;s College Scorecard, the average annual net cost for federal aid recipients to attend Berkeley&rsquo;s New York State campuses (after all scholarships and grants) is about $24,600. The average for all colleges nationally is about $16,130.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:18px;\">Berkeley-New York&rsquo;s graduation rate for students receiving federal financial aid is 30 percent, according to the College Scorecard, compared with 42 percent nationally.
