\n\tAfter Knicks Blow Big Lead, Carmelo Anthony Last-Second Jumper Subdues the 76ers:- <\/strong>In many ways, the Knicks’ season has been a circular exercise. They always seem to return to where they once were, whether it be in the assembling of their roster, their offensive philosophy or a game that has a hint of the familiar.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, the Knicks showed once again their tendency to repeat themselves. They returned to the triangle offense, and they let a double-digit lead waste away against the Philadelphia 76ers.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThis time, however, it was Carmelo Anthony, and not Philadelphia’s T .J. McConnell, who won the game at the last second as the Knicks eked out a 110-109 victory.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAnthony’s step-back jump shot along the baseline with 0.3 of a second remaining allowed the Knicks to escape a game that was uncomfortably reminiscent of an earlier ignominy, when they blew a double-digit lead in Philadelphia last month and lost<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t“This is like the exact repeat of the last game,” Knicks Coach Jeff Hornacek said he remembered thinking. “I’m glad it wasn’t a repeat.”<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Sixers took a 109-108 lead with nine seconds remaining on a basket by Jahlil Okafor. But Anthony was there to bail the Knicks out with the last of his 37 points.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t“All I wanted was a good look at the basket and a little bit space so I could rise up, and I got that,” Anthony said.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tStill, he added, “It shouldn’t have come to that.”<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Knicks have been searching for an offensive identity since adding Derrick Rose in the off-season — an attempt to fast-forward a rebuilding effort that may, too, end up back where it was. In that search, they have gone back to basics. And under the team’s president, Phil Jackson, that can only mean the triangle.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAlthough the triangle, Jackson’s preferred offensive system, had not been exercised entirely during the first half of the season, it was being used in lesser increments — primarily out of timeouts and late in games. Instead, Hornacek had instituted a more modern approach, trying to work the Knicks into an offense more reliant on pace and spacing. It was a welcome sight for the Knicks players, some of whom bristled at playing in the triangle. Just last week, Rose called it “random basketball.”<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tBut after the Knicks returned from the All-Star break, they turned back to the triangle in a bid to jump-start a team that now sits at 24-35 — closer to the bottom of the standings than they are to the last Eastern Conference playoff spot. After the break, they spent their first two practices on the triangle, players said, and executing triangle sets in transition.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t“Is it back?” Anthony asked. “I don’t think it ever left.”<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added: “It was always an emphasis since three years ago. It’s always been an emphasis on how we’re going to play, how we want to play. That’s our system. It’s just a matter now of looking at it more and doing it more and being more consistent with it.”<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tHornacek has begun leaning more heavily on the triangle offense in hopes of saving the Knicks’ defense, which entered the game against Philadelphia as the fifth worst in the N.B.A.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe team was too often caught in unfavorable situations as Rose drove to the basket and the Knicks’ wing players did not get back on defense quickly enough, Hornacek said.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tHornacek hoped the Knicks could also use the triangle set to facilitate points when the offense grows stagnant. He lamented the Knicks’ tendency to fall into a malaise on possessions when the primary ballhandler would not call out a play and leave the team unsure of what to do. The default, he said, is now the triangle, and the looks and options that it presents.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThat has cleared up some of the confusion, Courtney Lee explained.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t“Everybody knows we’re running something, so we know we’re on the same page,” he said.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Knicks ran triangle sets to open the game Saturday night, and they served Anthony well.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAnthony has grown agitated, at times, with the triangle. In November, he had tired of even talking about it publicly. But he was a beneficiary of it against the Sixers — he scored 17 points in the first quarter and played as efficiently as he has all season.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAnthony led five Knicks in double figures, including Rose’s 18 points and 11 each from Lance Thomas and Willy Hernangomez.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t“We’ve talked all year about finding that balance in what we do, and early offense and getting in the open court and playing that, and the amount of triangle that we run,” Hornacek said.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe change on offense was part of what Hornacek is hoping could be a fuller reset. The Knicks had a livelier than usual practice on Friday, an attempt by Hornacek to bring a more physical style of play to the team. Hornacek has called out his team on several occasions this season for its lackluster effort, especially on defense. Increased physicality, he said, could help, too.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t“We’re not doing much of that,” Hornacek said. “We’re most likely just playing the game. We’ve got to play with a little more intensity on the physical part. And if you get fouls, you get fouls. We’ve got to come in — teams score 30 points in a quarter, if you only have one foul at the end of the quarter, that’s a shame. That just shows you we weren’t physical enough and playing hard enough.”<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n
