Russell Westbrook Tops List of 14 All-Star Reserves Chosen by Coaches:-<\/strong> Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant are teammates again. Gordon Hayward, DeAndre Jordan and Kemba Walker are about to make their first appearances on the All-Star stage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conversely, Dwyane Wade\u2019s run of 12 straight selections in the N.B.A.\u2019s midseason showcase is on the cusp of ending.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oklahoma City\u2019s Westbrook \u2014 the N.B.A.\u2019s scoring leader and a triple-double machine \u2014 was among 14 reserves selected by the league\u2019s coaches for the All-Star Game, to be played in New Orleans on Feb. 19. Westbrook, the two-time reigning All-Star most valuable player, entered Thursday averaging 30.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists per game.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no question in my mind that he should be starting,\u201d Thunder Coach Billy Donovan said Thursday night. \u201cHowever, I understand that there\u2019s certain things that have to do with who does start.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The selection will reunite Westbrook on the Western Conference squad with his former teammate Durant, now with Golden State. Westbrook said this month that the two were no longer speaking.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Warriors tied the league mark with four selections, with the reserves Draymond Green and Klay Thompson joining Durant and Stephen Curry, already announced as starters. Other West reserves include Sacramento\u2019s DeMarcus Cousins, Marc Gasol of Memphis and the first-timers Hayward of Utah and Jordan of the Los Angeles Clippers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBout time!!! Congrats big fella!!\u201d Clippers guard Chris Paul tweeted about Jordan, who entered Thursday as the N.B.A.\u2019s rebounding leader.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Eastern Conference reserves are Indiana\u2019s Paul George, Cleveland\u2019s Kevin Love, Toronto\u2019s Kyle Lowry, Atlanta\u2019s Paul Millsap, Boston\u2019s Isaiah Thomas, Washington\u2019s John Wall and Charlotte\u2019s Walker.<\/span><\/p>\n

George said the selection \u201cmeans everything\u201d to him.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully I\u2019m doing things the right way,\u201d George said. \u201cHopefully I\u2019m playing this game the right way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Wade, the former Miami star in his first year with Chicago, would have been a starter under the old formula that took only fan voting into account for the opening five, but he did not qualify under a revised system that also took into account votes from players and a news media panel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some, including Coach Steve Kerr of Golden State, who will lead the West squad, said players had made a \u201cmockery\u201d of the process by wasting votes.<\/span><\/p>\n

On TNT, which announced the selections, Wall said, \u201cI just tried to keep it honest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He added, \u201cSome players didn\u2019t pick for the right people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Golden State\u2019s Zaza Pachulia and Philadelphia\u2019s Joel Embiid would also have started in the former system but, like Wade, were shut out of the selections. \u201cOnce again the popular vote didn\u2019t matter,\u201d Embiid wrote on Twitter.<\/span><\/p>\n

The East starters, announced last week, are Milwaukee\u2019s Giannis Antetokounmpo, Chicago\u2019s Jimmy Butler, Toronto\u2019s DeMar DeRozan and Cleveland\u2019s LeBron James and Kyrie Irving. The West starters are Curry, Durant, Houston\u2019s James Harden, San Antonio\u2019s Kawhi Leonard and Anthony Davis of host New Orleans.<\/span><\/p>\n
