Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Mattis, in his call to Fallon, \u201cemphasized the United States\u2019 unshakeable commitment to NATO\u201d as well as the close relationship the Pentagon enjoys with the British military.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Last week, Trump called the 28-nation NATO alliance \u201cobsolete\u201d and \u201cvery unfair to the United States.\u201d Trump also has criticized alliance members for failing to live up to guidelines calling for member states to spend 2% of their gross domestic product on defense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Mattis has consistently backed the alliance. As a Marine Corps general, he served as NATO&#8217;s Supreme Allied Commander for Transformation.
