Melo’s efforts fall short as Wizards sixth man steps in:-<\/strong> It was the sort of night that has been so familiar for Carmelo Anthony. A national television audience, a few voices in the crowd firing up and he responded the way a scorer does – setting a new Knicks franchise record for points in a quarter as he poured in 25 second-quarter points.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in a reflection of the way the season has gone for Anthony, he scored just two points in the first quarter, one in the third and finished with 34 points as the Knicks fell short in a 113-110 loss to the Washington Wizards at Madison Square Garden.<\/span><\/p>\n

And Anthony seemed poised to distribute for the biggest shot of the game, driving and kicking to Courtney Lee for a potential game-tying three-pointer with time running out. But that\u2019s when things got weird.<\/span><\/p>\n

Porzingis returns with a slam<\/span>
\n Lee saw Kelly Oubre Jr. closing out on him in his direct line of vision, but over his shoulder he heard another voice, what he thought was a defender, on the court, hand up and screaming that he had the help. So he faked, drove and kicked it out to Brandon Jennings, who was stripped as he tried to shoot, the buzzer sounding as Anthony and Jennings wondered why Lee didn\u2019t shoot.<\/span><\/p>\n

And when Lee retreated to the locker room and watched the replay it became clear why he didn\u2019t pull the trigger.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI see Oubre in front of me, but right here I\u2019m hearing , \u2018I got your help, I\u2019m right here, I\u2019m right here,\u2019\u201d Lee explained. \u201cI come to find out it\u2019s their coach standing next to me. I\u2019m thinking he\u2019s a player. So I drive and try to make a play. I don\u2019t know if the league should look into that. If that was a tactic in their defensive scheme it worked because I thought it was a player.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Wizards assistant coach, Sidney Lowe, was clearly on the court, standing closer to the three-point line than Lee, waving his arms and shouting instructions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was on the court. They have six players on the court,\u201d Anthony said. \u201cI mean, I saw Courtney open and to be quite honest with you, I was talking to Courtney after the game and he believed that, he thought it was Kelly or somebody closing out to him. He said that was the reason why didn\u2019t feel comfortable taking that shot. Then once you see it after, once he saw it after, they got some clarity on who it was.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never seen it before. I\u2019ve never seen that before, especially not in a situation like that. Close game, half court offense, we\u2019re trying to make something happen. I\u2019ve never seen anything like that. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

Anthony has absorbed more than his share of criticism this season, taking hits from his former coach George Karl and the Knicks\u2019 president Phil Jackson – as well as the media and fans as the Knicks have struggled through the first half of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n

He took another shot Thursday as the NBA All-Star starters were named in a poll of fans, media and players and after seven straight seasons as a starter he was left out, finishing a distant eighth among frontcourt players.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anthony had been voted in as a starter by the fans in each of the last seven seasons, including all five since joining the Knicks, and was an eight-time starter and nine-time all-star overall. The reserves, voted on by the conference coaches, will be announced next week.<\/span><\/p>\n

But this time he finished sixth among the fans, sixth in the player balloting and 12th from the media panel. That placed him eighth overall, two spots behind his teammate, Kristaps Porzingis, while LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jimmy Butler were named the frontcourt starters in the East.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t expecting you guys to vote me in. Not at all,\u201d Anthony said. \u201cI would love to be a part of that weekend, represent not only the Knicks, but represent New York as a city down there in New Orleans..\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Anthony\u2019s performance Thursday gave the Knicks a one-point lead at the half, but with Otto Porter Jr. scoring 15 points in the quarter the Wizards took a 100-86 lead into the fourth quarter. The Knicks seemed out of gas after a win in Boston Wednesday, but Porzingis, back for the first time in five games after an MRI of his sore left achilles in the morning cleared him, provided a spark midway through the fourth quarter. When Courtney Lee misfired from beyond the arc, Porzingis raced down the lane, soaring over Porter Jr. and slammed in a putback dunk.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a frantic back and forth, Derrick Rose then gave the Knicks the lead with 48.4 left, picking up a loose ball after his own miss and putting it in for a 110-109 lead. Wall hit a pair of free throws with 32.4 left and the Wizards were back in front.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anthony misfired on a baseline jumper and when Wall came out of the pack with the rebound he blew by Jennings at midcourt and went coast-to-coast for an uncontested dunk with 13.7 remaining for a 113-110 Washington lead, setting up the final Knicks\u2019 miscue.<\/span><\/p>\n
