Nikki Haley, the nominee for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, disagreed Wednesday with President-elect Donald Trump on several foreign policy issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Haley, questioned by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during her confirmation hearing, said their differences were a sign of Trump&#8217;s open-mindedness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">&#8220;That\u2019s how an administration works. You surround yourself with people who don\u2019t just say \u2018yes.\u2019 And what I know about the president-elect is he will listen,&#8221; Haley said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Here are four areas that Haley&#8217;s views differ from Trump:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Russia<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Trump has said the United States should cooperate more with Russia in the fight against terrorism, especially against the Islamic State. In an interview Monday with The Times of London, he said he would consider lifting sanctions over Russia\u2019s actions in Ukraine in return for a bilateral agreement to reduce nuclear arsenals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Haley said Russia is at the forefront of a lot of the issues facing the U.S., but Moscow must \u201cmake positive actions\u201d before sanctions are lifted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">\u201cWe cannot trust them (Russia) and need to continue to be cautious,\u201d Haley said. \u201cWe are not OK with what happened in Ukraine and Crimea, and what is happening in Syria. But we do need their help&#8221; against the Islamic State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Nikki Haley says U.S. can&#8217;t trust Russia, must be cautious<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"> China<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Trump has repeatedly antagonized China. He took a congratulatory call from Taiwan\u2019s President Tsai Ing-wen, breaking with long-held diplomatic protocol. He announced on Twitter the U.S. would not be bound by the \u201cone China\u201d policy that has formed the basis of U.S.-China relations since 1979. And he has criticized China for not doing enough to stop North Korea\u2019s nuclear program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Haley said: \u201cWe need to work with China.&#8221; The North Korea nuclear program \u201cwarrants very strong conversation with China to say this is a slap in the face to China\u201d and to every country that is worried about the North, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">NATO<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Trump told The Times of London that NATO was \u201cobsolete because it wasn\u2019t taking care of terror.\u201d During the campaign, Trump said he would decide whether to come to the defense of allies based on their contributions to NATO and whether their own defense spending is enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Haley said: \u201cI think NATO is an important alliance for us to have, and now we need more allies than ever.\u201d She also said, \u201cAny comments the president-elect has made are his comments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Ban on Muslim immigration<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">During his campaign, Trump called for \u201ca total and complete ban on Muslim immigration until we find out what\u2019s going on.&#8221; He later changed his comment to say he would ban immigration from countries impacted by terrorism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Haley said she would not support a Muslim ban, and Trump &#8220;corrected his position on that.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">She spoke in favor of granting asylum to refugees from Afghanistan, such as interpreters who helped keep her husband&#8217;s National Guard unit safe, but said she would reject Syrian refugees because FBI Director James Comey said there&#8217;s not enough information to vet them properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">U.S Muslim registry<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">As a candidate for the Republican nomination in 2015, Trump refused to dismiss the idea of requiring a database or registry of Muslims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Trump tweeted on Nov. 20, 2015, \u201cI didn\u2019t suggest a database-a reporter did.
