Almost 50 people were later brought to a hospital in Faisalabad, the closest major city, for treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">By Tuesday, the death toll had reached 27, Atif Imran Qureshi, a police official in Toba Tek Singh, said in a phone interview. The provincial government ordered an inquiry into the episode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The sale of alcohol is restricted in Pakistan, but non-Muslims and foreigners can get permits from the provincial and federal authorities to consume it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Most residents of the Mubarakabad neighborhood of Toba Tek Singh, where the alcohol was consumed, are Christians, a minority in Pakistan. Members of the local Christian community mostly do menial jobs and are unable to afford licensed alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">On Sunday evening, as Christmas celebrations were underway, alcohol was served, and many people became sick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cWe are still investigating what kind of drink it was,\u201d Mr. Qureshi said. \u201cWe didn\u2019t find any bottles, but it would most probably be homemade liquor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Despite the countrywide restrictions, alcohol is easily available, and a large number of Muslims also indulge in it. Business is booming for Murree Brewery, Pakistan\u2019s only brewery, which reported a profit this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Affluent customers in major cities \u2014 Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi \u2014 can also order alcohol from bootleggers, who often bribe the police to keep their operations going.
