Harry was just 12 years old at the time of his mother’s death, and he now says that it took him a long time to cope with—and even think about—the loss.
“I’d never really dealt with what had actually happened, so there was a lot of buried emotion, and for a huge part of my life, I just didn’t even want to think about it,” Harry, 32, says in a new ITV documentary, Prince Harry in Africa, per Us Weekly.

The documentary focuses on Harry’s work with Sentebale, the charity he cofounded in Lesotho with the small country’s Prince Seeiso in 2006. Harry says he created Sentebale in his mother’s honor to help carry on her work of fighting the stigma of HIV/AIDS, and that his charity work helped him process his mother’s death. “I now view life differently from what it used to be. I used to bury my head in the sand and let everything around [me] tear [me] to pieces,” he said. “I was fighting the system, going, ‘I don’t want to be this person.’ My mother died when I was very, very young, and I don’t want to be in this position. Now I’m so energized, fired up, to be lucky enough to be in a position to make a difference.”

In July, Harry told a crowd at the mental health charity Heads Together that he wishes he had talked about his mother’s death sooner. “I really regret not talking ever about it,” he said. “For the first 28 years of my life, I never talked about it.”

Paul Coleman, Psy.D., author of Finding Peace When Your Heart Is In Pieces, tells SELF that repressing feelings after a tragedy isn’t unusual, especially for a child. “Most people after a tragedy have some degree of denial,” he says, noting that the bigger the tragedy, the harder it is to wrap your mind around it. “Children do not have the ability to think abstractly, and they lack the perspective that age and maturity bring, so major losses are felt but not always processed effectively,” he says. “Adults can often use words and logic or philosophy to tame some of the more painful emotions—though it may take time—whereas children simply feel pain with no good ability to make sense of it. So repression may be a way to cope.”

The desire to repress feelings that stem from a tragedy is ingrained in people, Simon Rego, Psy.D., chief psychologist at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, tells SELF. “People instinctively lean toward the things that feel better and lean away from the things that feel threatening or uncomfortable,” he says. As a result, he says people may cope with grief by not talking about the loss of a loved one, avoiding reminders of that person, or distracting themselves when particular memories come to mind—and some people may turn to drugs and alcohol to try to numb those emotions. “All of these are attempts to not experience the emotions associated with the tragedy,” Rego says.

Coleman says it isn’t necessarily a bad thing to repress feelings after a tragedy; it just depends on how long the repression lasts. “Defense mechanisms are meant to be short-term coping mechanisms—sort of like binding up an ankle after a sprain to dull the pain a bit—but repression is not supposed to last for years,” he says. However, he adds, that can and does happen and can cause issues for a person down the road when anything triggers those feelings of loss. For example, a person who lost a parent at an early age and repressed the emotions may struggle more than the average person to cope with a failed relationship.

Repressing emotions for a long period of time can also make it difficult for people to process what happened. “The emotions then tend to live on so that any time we try to think about whoever it was or the memories are cued, the emotions come flooding back in intensity as if it just happened,” Rego says. “Avoidance in the short-term might make you feel better, but in the long term the emotions linger—they never get processed.”

Rego says it’s “perfectly normal” for people to go through emotions like sadness, guilt, nervousness, stress, and anger immediately after a loss. “That’s the body and brain trying to make sense of it the best it can,” he says. “Just accept that whatever you’re feeling in the short-term is OK.” People who are able to move on, however, are typically those who talk about it with friends and family and strive to restore a sense of normalcy as soon as they feel comfortable.

Rego notes that time is a big factor. “Even diagnostically, we allow space for normal bereavement,” he says. “What can look like depression can be a perfectly normal grieving reaction. It only becomes disordered when you can’t do the things you normally would do.”

But some people really struggle to move on after a period of time following loss, with feelings of desperation, high levels of stress, and even feelings that life isn’t worth living. When that happens, Rego says it’s a good idea to seek help from a mental help professional for an evaluation.

Prince Harry Regrets Not Talking About Princess Diana’s Death Sooner Prince Harry Regrets Not Talking About Princess Diana’s Death Sooner:- The tragic death of Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, has been publicly discussed and analyzed repeatedly since her fatal car accident occurred in 1997.
