Donald Trump Names Top Michigan Official to Senior G.O.P. Committee Post<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Donald Trump Names Top Michigan Official to Senior G.O.P. Committee Post:-<\/strong> President-elect Donald J. Trump announced Wednesday that Ronna Romney McDaniel, the chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party, would serve as the senior official of the Republican National Committee, rewarding a loyalist from a crucial state and retaining a firm grip on his adopted party.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms. McDaniel is the niece of Mitt Romney \u2014 but unlike her uncle, she was a steadfast supporter of Mr. Trump\u2019s campaign after he became the Republican nominee, helping him narrowly carry Michigan. Mr. Trump, the first Republican presidential candidate since 1988 to win Michigan, was known to refer to her during the campaign as \u201cmy Romney.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRonna has been extremely loyal to our movement and her efforts were critical to our tremendous victory in Michigan, and I know she will bring the same passion to the Republican National Committee,\u201d Mr. Trump said in a statement announcing the appointment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The selection of Ms. McDaniel, who will become only the second woman to lead the R.N.C., amounts to a victory for Reince Priebus, the current party chairman and the incoming White House chief of staff. Mr. Priebus had lobbied for her to get the job as part of an effort to keep control of the party even as he enters the West Wing.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an illustration of the jostling for power within Mr. Trump\u2019s team of advisers, Mr. Priebus had to fend off an attempt by some allies of Vice President-elect Mike Pence to install Nick Ayers, a Republican operative and one of Mr. Pence\u2019s advisers, at the party. Mr. Priebus also had to avert another, potentially more worrisome challenge to his hold on the party: Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, who would have hardly been a caretaker party chairman, was thought for a time to have been a contender for the post.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is customary for presidents to decide who leads their party, but there is also a history of White House aides chafing when their handpicked chairmen try to exert their own authority. Ms. McDaniel was officially named as deputy chairwoman of the party, as the full Republican committee must vote on her appointment when Mr. Priebus formally vacates the job next year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Trump also named Bob Paduchik as a deputy co-chairman, with the intention of making him party co-chairman next year. Mr. Paduchik ran Mr. Trump\u2019s Ohio campaign and developed a relationship with the president-elect and his inner circle.<\/span><\/p>\n
