{"id":16124,"date":"2016-11-30T09:01:14","date_gmt":"2016-11-30T09:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/?p=16124"},"modified":"2016-11-30T09:01:14","modified_gmt":"2016-11-30T09:01:14","slug":"internet-archive-putting-database-canada-keep-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biphoo.com\/bipnews\/technology\/internet-archive-putting-database-canada-keep-trump.html","title":{"rendered":"Internet Archive putting database in Canada to keep it from Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Internet Archive, a nonprofit that saves copies of old web pages, is creating a backup of its database in Canada, in response to the election of Donald Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<em>On November 9th in America, we woke up to a new administration promising radical change,<\/em>\u201d the organization wrote in a blogpost explaining the move. \u201cIt was a firm reminder that institutions like ours, built for the long-term, need to design for change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Internet Archive is responsible for services like the <strong>Wayback Machine,<\/strong> a tool that allows users to access cached versions of websites long after they are pulled from the internet, and Open Library, which offers free access to millions of e-books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The move will cost millions, according to the Internet Archive, which is soliciting donations.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In their post, the Internet Archive justified its decision to backup its data in Canada, claiming that Trump could threaten an open internet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201c<em>For us, it means keeping our cultural materials safe, private and perpetually accessible. It means preparing for <\/em>a Web<em> that may face greater restrictions.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">During his campaign, Trump sparked fear among free speech advocates with threats to close up \u201ccertain areas\u201d of the internet in an effort to prevent terrorists from communicating or recruiting online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cSomebody will [say] &#8216;Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.&#8217; These are foolish people.
