SAN FRANCISCO \u2014 Hyperloop One, the startup trying to create a tubular form of high-speed transportation, has settled a lawsuit brought by its former chief technology officer and three other employees.<\/span><\/p>\n A letter from Hyperloop One CEO Rob Lloyd to staff Friday, which was obtained by USA TODAY, does not provide settlement terms but instead urges employees to “focus on achieving our Q1 milestones and show the world the first working Hyperloop One system to the shape the future of transportation.”<\/span><\/p>\n Justin Berger, attorney for former CTO Brogan BamBrogan as well as Hyperloop One staffers David Pendergast, William Mulholland and Knut Sauer, told USA TODAY that the quartet was “pleased … and look forward to moving on with their plans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n In a statement, the four men said: “We are planning to build bad (stuff) with rad people, starting with our take on Hyperloop. More to come shortly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The fact that the group plans to start a company focused on Hyperloop technology is intriguing because it was a charge leveled at the four in Hyperloop One’s countersuit. <\/span><\/p>\n The idea behind Hyperloop<\/span> first dreamed up by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk in a white paper a few years ago, is as simple as it is outrageous.<\/span><\/p>\n A series of finely machined tubes running for hundreds of miles would allow vacuum-propelled pods \u2014 similar to a plastic puck on an air-hockey table \u2014 to carry people and cargo at speeds up to 800 mph, reducing a six-hour drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco to a 30-minute whoosh.<\/span><\/p>\n Proponents, which also include rival company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, argue that once built, the system would be cheap to operate and better for the environment than trucks and even trains. Critics cite the complexity of the engineering and the impact on passengers of traveling at such speeds.<\/span><\/p>\n Hyperloop One was first out of the gate, inviting investors and media to a brief demonstration of its tech at a facility outside of Las Vegas last spring. Then came the lawsuit, filed in July by founding CTO Brogan BamBrogan and three other employees.<\/span><\/p>\n They claimed that early Uber investor Shervin Pishevar, whose Sherpa Capital also has poured money into Hyperloop One, violated his fiduciary duties, and leveled charges of wrongful termination, breach of contract and infliction of emotional distress.<\/span><\/p>\n In perhaps the most dramatic example of the treatment BamBrogan claims to have been subjected to, a noose was left on his desk.<\/span><\/p>\n Hyperloop One countersued the group, which they called the Gang of Four, claiming the quartet had plans to steal company secrets and start a competing venture. The countersuit noted that the <\/span>noose was not a threat but a lasso, a reference to BamBrogan’s cowboy ways.<\/span><\/p>\n Most recently, Pishevar was in the news the day after the election of Donald Trump, tweeting that he was eager to help make California’s secession from the U.S. priority for state lawmakers.<\/span><\/p>\n “It’s the most patriotic thing I can do,” Pishevar tweeted. “The country is [at] a serious crossroads.” Some other tech executives pledged to support Pishevar’s effort.<\/span><\/p>\n The election was not referenced in Lloyd’s letter to staffers, which instead highlighted three areas in which the company made progress despite the pall of the lawsuit.<\/span><\/p>\n They include opening a fabrication facility on its remote Nevada property, where Hyperloop One plans to build a working model of the technology. Lloyd says the company still expects its “Kitty Hawk” moment to happen in “early 2017.”<\/span><\/p>\n Although this test will take place in the U.S., odds are the first commercially operational Hyperloop will pop up overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n Hyperloop One says it has so far partnered on feasibility studies with a variety of interested governments, including officials in Moscow, Dubai, Holland and Finland.
