Cities across the USA saw a new round of protests Sunday, as rallies denouncing the election of Donald Trump continued for a fifth straight day.<\/span><\/p>\n Demonstrators supporting immigrant rights marched Sunday in Manhattan. Other gatherings were taking place in Chicago, Hollywood, Philadelphia, Seattle and Fort Lauderdale, among other cities, according to social media sites and news reports.<\/span><\/p>\n Tens of thousands of demonstrators have filled the streets of Austin, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and other cities since Tuesday, when Trump beat rival Hillary Clinton in the Electoral College count, but lost the popular vote, to become the president-elect. Protesters have denounced what they say was hateful rhetoric from Trump during his campaign against immigrants, Muslims and women.<\/span><\/p>\n On Sunday, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., attempted to quell protesters’ angst and fears.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cPeople should really put their minds at ease,\u201d he said on CNN\u2019s State of the Union. \u201cWe\u2019re pluralistic, we\u2019re inclusive. That\u2019s the country we are and that\u2019s the country we\u2019ll continue to have.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The protests have been mostly peaceful, though Los Angeles, Indianapolis and New York reported some arrests. But in Portland, Ore., police arrested 71 people after Saturday night’s protest turned into a riot, KGW-TV reported Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n Seven people were arrested and two police officers were injured Saturday night during an anti-Trump rally in Indianapolis. About 500 people initially gathered at the Statehouse at 5 p.m. at a rally that was mostly peaceful until later in the evening when police used what appeared to be a pepper gun on some protesters walking in the street.<\/span><\/p>\n High school students in Seattle were also planning a large walkout Monday to protest the president-elect. People marched in downtown Seattle in the rain Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cYou can\u2019t change the results of a presidential election by protesting. That\u2019s irrational,\u201d said Stephen King, 18, a student at the University of Texas-Austin who marched in Austin rallies last week. \u201cBut I couldn\u2019t sit down idly and just accept that this happened. I need to speak up for those who don\u2019t have that privilege.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The weekend demonstrations top a tumultuous week following Tuesday’s vote, where both Clinton and Trump supporters have been targeted in discriminatory and violent incidents.<\/span><\/p>\n An 11-year-old elementary student in Stafford, Texas, was allegedly attacked Wednesday by classmates when he revealed he had supported Trump in the school\u2019s mock election. And a Central Florida high school student got into fights with another student and school officials over a pro-Trump sign, according to local news reports.<\/span><\/p>\n A student at the University of Oklahoma was temporarily suspended for inciting racist speech on a chat site, and police in Ann Arbor, Mich., were looking into a report of a man who threatened to set a Muslim student on fire with a lighter if she didn\u2019t remove her hijab Friday, according to the Associated Press.<\/span><\/p>\n In Indiana, home state of Vice President-elect Mike Pence, St. David’s Episcopal Church in Bean Blossom was vandalized sometime Saturday night.<\/span><\/p>\n Vandals painted tags on the walls, depicting a swastika, an anti-gay slur and “Heil Trump.”<\/span><\/p>\n The Rev. Kelsey Hutto, priest in charge at the church, said she was disheartened after finding the graffiti on the walls of the church Sunday morning. But her next thought was more positive.<\/span><\/p>\n “Well, we must be doing something right,” Hutto said she thought. “We stated one time that doing the right thing was not always the popular thing. We were targeted for a reason, and in our mind it was for a good reason.”<\/span><\/p>\n The Southern Poverty Law Center had logged 201 incidents of election-related harassment and intimidation across the USA, as of Friday. The group also recorded around 10 incidents directed at Trump supporters.
