Dems eye Elizabeth Warren as voice of opposition to prez Donald Trump<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Dems eye Elizabeth Warren as <\/strong>voice of opposition to prez Donald Trump:-<\/strong> Bay State U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren said yesterday she\u2019s looking to move past her differences with President-elect Donald Trump, but party leaders say she has a chance to emerge as the face of Democratic opposition to his policies, including Supreme Court nominations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s no secret that I didn\u2019t want to see Donald Trump win yesterday,\u201d said Warren \u2014 who frequently traded insults with Trump in speeches and Twitter posts. But, her statement said, \u201cPresident-elect Trump promised to rebuild our economy for working people, and I offer to put aside our differences and work with him on that task.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Former Democratic <\/span>Nat-ional Committee Chairman Steve Grossman told the Herald the Democratic Party has no stronger voice than Warren, and taking on Trump and a GOP-controlled Congress could raise her profile nationally \u2014 making her a likely 2020 presidential prospect.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe leadership role she plays over the next two years \u2014 not picking every fight, picking battles judiciously \u2014 that, in many, many ways will validate the confidence in her and her brand of leadership that residents of the commonwealth already have,\u201d Grossman said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Former Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairman John Walsh said he is glad Warren is reaching out to Trump, but noted Trump has opposed consumer protection regulations Warren has pushed <\/span>for, and predicted the senator would be a merciless opponent if she disagrees with him.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the president does things that she thinks will be hurtful, she\u2019ll fight like hell,\u201d Walsh said.<\/span><\/p>\n

And while the Democrats are at a low ebb of influence with no control of Congress, Walsh said Warren would avoid being marginalized.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s not worried about playing the insider game, who everybody likes, who you have to go to a party with,\u201d Walsh said. \u201cYou can\u2019t marginalize someone in those circumstances.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

David A. Hopkins, an assistant professor of political science at Boston College, said, \u201cMy guess is she will position herself to be one of the more aggressive opponents of Trump on that issue as well as others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Warren could lead filibuster attempts against any Supreme Court nominees.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be a demand within the party for that and she\u2019ll be likely to play that role,\u201d Hopkins said. \u201cA lot of Democrats will be trying to figure out in the next four years who\u2019s in charge of the party \u2014 the Clinton years are over, the Obama years are over, who are the next people to speak for the party?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
