Finally, it hit the oncoming No. 10 MTA bus from Dundalk to Catonsville.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cIt is with great sadness that I express condolences on behalf of the city to the families that were impacted by this tragic bus accident today,\u201d said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. \u201d You realize that Baltimore is a big city but also a small town when something like this happens there are so many connections to the individuals who were lost today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Six people were killed in the wreck, including bus drivers of both the school bus and the <\/span>the MTA<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"> bus, officials said. There were no children on the school bus at the time of the crash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Baltimore Police spokesperson T.J. Smith identified the six victims killed only by age:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">51-year-old man<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">46-year-old woman<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">33-year-old (Ebonee Baker, MTA bus driver)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">67-year-old man (school bus driver)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">51-year-old woman<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">32-year-old man<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThis was a grueling and gruesome process of removing bodies, all six people were dead on the scene,\u201d Smith said. \u201cOur homicide investigators were out here because this is an extraordinary incident. Rarely do we deal with mass casualty situations that involve <\/span>this many deaths<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"> at one scene. So we brought out additional personnel to support our crash scene. This is a crash investigation, not a criminal investigation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">During a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, MTA spokesperson Paul Shepherd confirmed the death of one of their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cWe are really wounded but we\u2019re going to come out of this stronger,\u201d said Shepherd . \u201cWe want to thank you all for being here. We can confirm, sadly, that our operator was among the fatalities in this terrible accident.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">WJZ has learned the <\/span>identify<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"> of the MTA bus driver is 33-year-old Ebonee Baker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis expressed his sadness on the tragic event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cThey\u2019re on their way to make a living, they\u2019re on their way to the job and they\u2019re on their way to support their families,\u201d Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said. \u201cOur hearts and prayers go out to them, to their families, to their co-workers as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Police say the school bus is contracted to Baltimore City through AA Affordable Transportation. The bus\u2013occupied only by the driver and a school aid\u2013 was on its way to pick up 18 special needs children. The driver died in the collision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">NTSB Investigator Jennifer Morrison says her team is gathering information on the crash and will remain on the scene for the rest of the week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cWe expect to be in the area for the remainder of the week. During that time, we will continue to gather factual information with the goal of ultimately determining the cause of the crash, and <\/span>issuing<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"> safety recommendations aimed at preventing future crashes and fatalities,\u201d Morrison said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">WITNESSES RECOUNT CRASH<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Shawn Braxton of Columbia, Maryland, says he was driving to work Tuesday morning when his silver Ford Mustang was hit. The collision crushed the rear of the car and forced its nose into the pavement<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cI just look up and I still see the bus going down the street and at that point I just had to close my eyes and try to get myself together,\u201d Braxton said. \u201cAnd then people came into the car and started helping me out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cWhen I got out that\u2019s when I could hear the people yelling, \u2018Get me out of here,&#8217;\u201d said Matthew Feldman, who was on the scene before first responders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Feldmann didn\u2019t think twice before jumping in to help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cFirst we tried to go in through the door but every time we would peel the door open she was right there and it was pinching something and she started screaming real bad. So then we had to stop and <\/span>me<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"> and the guy went through the front and he started grabbing the front windshield and we lifted it up off of her,\u201d Feldman said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The school bus was so damaged that police have not been able to access the full bus yet, police said this morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">According to a statement from Baltimore City Schools, seven different vendors are contracted to provide transportation for students. The bus in question provided service to 18 elementary school students who receive curb-to-curb transportation from their homes to school. Starting tomorrow, those children will be transported by a bus owned by city schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cAt this time of tragedy, our hearts and thoughts are with the families, friends, and loved ones of those killed and injured,\u201d the statement says. \u201cWe hope for the speedy and full recovery of all those injured.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">10 VICTIMS INJURED<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Ten people total were taken from the scene to local hospitals, their injuries ranging from minor to critical:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">40-year-old man in critical condition<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">29-year-old woman suffered minor injuries<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">38-year-old woman suffered minor injuries<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">25-year-old woman suffered minor <\/span>injures<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">32-year-old woman suffered minor injuries<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">23-year-old woman suffered minor injuries<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">29-year-old woman in critical condition<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">36-year-old man suffered minor injuries<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">52-year-old man suffered minor <\/span>injures<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">44-year-old woman suffered minor injuries<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Deborah M. Stein, Chief of Trauma and Director Neurotrauma Critical Care at the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, provided an update to the press around 11:30 a.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cWe are currently treating five patients,\u201d she said. \u201cOne is critically injured, one is in serious, and the other three are fortunately in stable condition\u2026 They are actually relatively generic injuries for what we see in motor vehicle crashes. I can\u2019t give any details on the actual specifics of the injuries of the patients, but injuries to facial bones, injuries to <\/span>spine<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">, spinal column, some visceral injuries as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cAt least two of the patients will certainly be staying with us I would anticipate another patient will be admitted for observation,\u201d Stein went on to say. \u201cThe fourth patient will likely stay for a short period of time. I believe one patient will be discharged\u2026 Given the nature of the incident, we certainly had all hands on deck. The collaboration and cooperation from our colleagues in the emergency department <\/span>was<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"> really quite extraordinary. It was right at <\/span>change<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"> of shift, there was not a single person who left the building after finishing their night shift. They all stayed to make sure if their help was going to be needed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">CAUSE OF THE CRASH<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">Police say it is possible the school bus driver had a medical emergency because they have no evidence the bus tried to stop before hitting the car and the MTA bus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The school bus \u201cbasically ripped the entire driver\u2019s side off\u201d the MTA bus, Smith said. \u201cIt literally looks like a bomb exploded <\/span>in<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\"> the bus and it\u2019s catastrophic damage.
