Pence adds space-program support to Trump stumping<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Pence adds space-program support to Trump stumping:-<\/strong> Citing the space program as an example of American leadership in decline, Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence urged hundreds of supporters Monday afternoon to help propel him and Donald Trump to the White House.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe all know that space is the final frontier,\u201d the Indiana governor and former congressman said at the Space Coast Convention Center, about 25 miles from Kennedy Space Center. \u201cAnd just as we\u2019ve always done before, America needs to lead the way on the final frontier.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton are running nearly even in the race to claim Florida\u2019s critical 29 electoral votes, according to an average of polls from RealClear Politics. It showed Trump ahead by half a percentage point despite Clinton leading five of the nine polls cited.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of that closeness, Pence made three stops Monday in the Sunshine State, heading to the Orlando suburb of Maitland in mid-afternoon and landing in Clearwater on the Gulf Coast later in the evening. In Clearwater, the lights and all electricity went out about 10 minutes into his stump speech.<\/span><\/p>\n

For a few moments, people in an airplane hangar at Signature Flight Support there weren\u2019t sure what to do. Some chanted \u201cdrain the swamp\u201d and \u201cUSA!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Pence left the stage briefly, then returned with a bullhorn to resume his speech as the crowd of about 1,000 cheered. About 10 minutes later, the power came back on and so did his microphone.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m here with the lights on, the lights off, bullhorn, flashlights. I\u2019m here for this team,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back in Cocoa, Pence urged rally attendees to vote \u2014 it appeared most already had \u2014 and spread the word to friends. He made a plea to Republicans to \u201ccome home\u201d and support the ticket.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFlorida, we\u2019ve got work to do,\u201d Pence said. \u201cTime\u2019s a-wasting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Pence\u2019s pledge of support for the space program, which has barely been discussed during the campaign, played well on the Atlantic coast, briefly prompting a chant of \u201cSpace! Space!\u201d Pence, 57, said he remembered black-and-white TV images of the early space programs that served as \u201canthems of my youth, the inspiration not just of America but of the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur space program needs new leadership and a new vision,\u201d Pence said. \u201cWe cannot afford to fall further behind in space exploration or technology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He said a Trump-Pence administration would focus NASA missions on deep space exploration, implying, as advisers have said, that NASA spends too much on Earth-focused science such as investigating climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pence promised that NASA would promote more partnerships with commercial space firms, beyond contracts already in place to fly cargo and soon astronauts to the International Space Station. The Republican nominees also want to revive a National Space Council, led by the vice president, to coordinate policies and technologies across sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe can be more efficient. We can be more effective. We can use space dollars wisely,\u201d Pence said. \u201cBut we\u2019re going to do it. We\u2019re going to make the investments. And we\u2019re going to create a brighter and boundless future for America and a growing economy on the Space Coast for generations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While calling for new leadership and vision, it was not clear if the priorities Pence laid out would change human spaceflight programs now targeting launches from Cape Canaveral by 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

NASA is helping Boeing and SpaceX prepare rockets to fly crews to the station, and developing an Apollo-style rocket and capsule for deep space missions, first around the moon and possibly to Mars in the 2030s.<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides space, Pence’s stump remarks repeated themes central to the Trump campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saying Clinton was dogged by an \u201cavalanche of scandals,\u201d he discussed the FBI\u2019s recently announced review of new e-mails found on a Clinton aide\u2019s computer. The e-mails emerged months after the FBI closed an investigation into whether Clinton mishandled classified information, recommending no charges.<\/span><\/p>\n

The issue prompted chants of \u201cLock her up!\u201d from the crowd, which also called for Trump to \u201cbuild a wall\u201d to protect against illegal immigration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pence criticized Clinton as weak on national security and the economy, and said the next president would shape the Supreme Court’s balance for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDo not rest. Do not relent for the next eight days until you do everything in your power to ensure that the next president to make appointments to the Supreme Court of the United States is President Donald Trump,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

That was a key issue for rally attendee Dan Acker, a 78-year-old resident of Merritt Island, Fla. The former NASA contractor during the Gemini and Apollo programs called it “ridiculous\u201d that the U.S. now relies on Russia to put astronauts in space.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was pleased to hear what he said about the space program,\u201d Acker said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sherry Ashby, 66, of Palm Bay, Fla. was first in line at 7 a.m. ET for the noon rally. Echoing many others in the crowd, she pointed to anti-abortion laws, stricter immigration access and looser gun policies as the election\u2019s most important issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey (illegal immigrants) never helped make the road or died for their country, and they\u2019re getting more benefits than me who has worked all my life,\u201d she said, calling for the need to secure America\u2019s borders. \u201cI have nothing against immigrants, I have nothing against someone coming into our country, but it\u2019s very clear that you\u2019re supposed to come in and assimilate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
