Looking past Trump, Clinton aims to help other Democrats<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Looking past Trump, Clinton aims to help other Democrats:-<\/strong> Newly confident and buoyant in the polls, Hillary Clinton is looking past Donald Trump while widening her mission to include helping Democrats seize the Senate and chip away at the Republican-controlled House.<\/span><\/p>\n

Though Trump\u2019s campaign insisted Sunday it was premature to count him out, it\u2019s Clinton whose path to winning the White House has only grown wider in the race\u2019s final weeks. Even longtime Republican strongholds such as Utah and Arizona suddenly appear within her reach on Nov. 8, enticing Democrats to campaign hard in territory they haven\u2019t won for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

The shifting political map has freed Clinton and her well-funded campaign to spend time and money helping other Democrats in competitive races. Clinton said she didn\u2019t \u201ceven think about responding\u201d to Trump anymore and would instead spend the final weeks on the road \u201cemphasizing the importance of electing Democrats down the ballot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re running a coordinated campaign, working hard with gubernatorial, Senate and House candidates,\u201d said Robby Mook, Clinton\u2019s campaign manager.<\/span><\/p>\n

And for good reason.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a merciless two-year campaign, the next president will face the daunting task of governing a bitterly divided nation. If Clinton wins, her prospects for achieving her goals will be greatly diminished unless her victory is accompanied by major Democratic gains in Congress.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to do the hard and maybe most important work of healing, healing our country,\u201d Clinton said Sunday at Union Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Democrats, there\u2019s another reason to try to run up the score. With Trump warning he may contest the race\u2019s outcome if he loses, Clinton\u2019s campaign is hoping for an overwhelming Democratic victory that would undermine any attempt by Trump to claim the election had been stolen from him.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a rare admission of fallibility by the typically boastful Trump, his campaign acknowledged he\u2019s trailing Clinton as Election Day nears.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are behind,\u201d Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said. Still, she added, \u201cWe\u2019re not giving up. We know we can win this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Conway laid out in granular detail Trump\u2019s potential path to winning: victories in Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, Nevada and Ohio, to start. If Trump prevents Arizona and Georgia from falling to Democrats and adds in some combination of Colorado, Virginia, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, he could reach the 270 electoral votes needed, Conway said.<\/span><\/p>\n

It won\u2019t be easy. A current Associated Press analysis of polling, demographic trends and other campaign data rates Virginia as solidly Democratic, while Colorado, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania are all leaning Democratic. Arizona, remarkably, is a toss-up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Campaigning Sunday in Florida, Trump called for voters to elect a Republican House and Senate that would \u201cswiftly enact\u201d his priorities, which include overhauling taxes, restoring higher spending on defense and repealing the Affordable Care Act.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe can enact our whole plan in the first 100 days \u2014 and we will,\u201d Trump said.<\/span><\/p>\n

If Clinton wins, Democrats would need a net gain of four Senate seats to retake the majority. House control would be much harder. Democrats would need a 30-seat gain, a feat they haven\u2019t accomplished in roughly four decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clinton\u2019s nascent focus on helping fellow Democrats comes with an inherent contradiction. For months, she deliberately avoided the strategy employed by other Democrats of trying to saddle all Republicans with an unpopular Trump. In August, she said Trump represented the \u201cradical fringe,\u201d rather than the mainstream of the Republican Party.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have not run this campaign as a campaign against the GOP with the big broad brush \u2014 we\u2019ve run it against Donald Trump,\u201d Clinton\u2019s running mate, Tim Kaine, said in a weekend interview with The Associated Press.<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrea Bozek of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the Senate GOP\u2019s campaign arm, said Clinton\u2019s last-minute push to aid Democrats was insufficient to make up for her party\u2019s shortfalls in recruiting competitive candidates this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDemocrats have relied on political gravity from the presidential race to carry them across the finish line,\u201d Bozek said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, as Clinton campaigned in North Carolina, where Democrats hope to unseat GOP Sen. Richard Burr, Clinton\u2019s argument appeared to rest on the hopes that voters offended by Trump would vote against Burr, too. She said Democratic candidate and American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Deborah Ross knows that Trump \u201cis wrong for America.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUnlike her opponent, Deborah has never been afraid to stand up to Donald Trump,\u201d Clinton said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, Clinton\u2019s campaign said she remained intent on reaching out to GOP voters and was specifically targeting Republican politicians who haven\u2019t denounced Trump. Campaign spokesman Brian Fallon said the policies Clinton has prioritized for her first 100 days \u201care ones that Republicans should have every reason to work with us on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Clinton isn\u2019t the only Democrat putting a premium on down-ballot races. President Barack Obama flew to Nevada on Sunday to campaign for Clinton and Senate candidate Catherine Cortez Masto before heading to California to raise money for House Democrats.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Nevada, Obama went after Cortez Masto\u2019s Republican opponent, Rep. Joe Heck. Heck said he couldn\u2019t support Trump after a 2005 tape surfaced of Trump using vulgar, predatory language about women. But Obama said GOP candidates were simply reacting to Trump\u2019s slipping poll numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToo late. You don\u2019t get credit for that,\u201d Obama said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He and Vice President Joe Biden have recorded ads, raised money and campaigned in person for dozens Democratic candidates this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mook spoke on CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union.\u201d Conway spoke on \u201cFox News Sunday\u201d and NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
