Emotionally disturbed woman fatally shot by NYPD officer<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Emotionally disturbed woman fatally shot by NYPD officer:-<\/strong> A Bronx woman who police said was emotionally disturbed was pronounced dead at a hospital Tuesday night after an altercation with a police officer that ended with fatal gunshots, the New York City Police Department said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The woman was black and the police officer is white, WCBS reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shortly after 6 p.m., police responded to a call from a neighbor in the Bronx apartment building saying the woman was acting irrationally, according to police. When they arrived, they found a 66-year-old woman in a bedroom armed with <\/span>a scissors, NYPD Assistant Chief Larry Nikunen told reporters Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Police talked with the woman and successfully persuaded her to put down the scissors, but after that, she picked up a baseball bat and tried to swing at a police sergeant, <\/span>Nikunen said.<\/span><\/p>\n

At that point, the police sergeant fired two shots from a service revolver at the woman, police said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The woman was hit in the chest and left elbow, the New York Daily News reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

The woman was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, also in the Bronx, where she was pronounced dead, according to police.<\/span><\/p>\n

Police declined to give out identification on the woman or the police sergeant and said the incident is being investigated.<\/span><\/p>\n

There have been several similar calls involving the woman in the past, Nikunen said during a press conference. He doesn’t have details on those incidents, he told reporters.<\/span><\/p>\n

“A full review of the facts and circumstances of this incident will be conducted,” <\/span>Nikunen said.<\/span><\/p>\n
