Feds say Hoboken train was speeding, hit 21 mph just before deadly crash<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Feds say Hoboken train was speeding, hit 21 mph just before deadly crash<\/strong> : The train that crashed into the Hoboken Terminal last week, killing one person and injuring more than 100, accelerated from 8 mph to 21 mph as the throttle was pushed forward in the seconds leading up to the accident, federal authorities said Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new information was released shortly before the train was towed from the terminal to a nearby rail yard. The front car, containing the engineer\u2019s cab, was partly covered by a blue tarp where its roof was crushed. NJ Transit has not said when the rail station will reopen.<\/span><\/p>\n

The National Transportation Safety Board said information from an event recorder was recovered and examined on Thursday, one week after the Sept. 29 crash, along with video from a camera that was pointed forward from the front of the train.<\/span><\/p>\n

The engineer, Thomas Gallagher of Morris Plains, had told investigators that the train was traveling about 10 mph as it approached the station, the speed limit for that area. He said he did not remember the crash itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

The NTSB said the throttle was at idle as the train traveled at 8 mph while approaching the station, but was pushed 38 seconds before the train crashed. The throttle was then pushed back to idle \u201cjust prior to the collision,\u201d but the train continued to travel at 21 mph when it entered the station and struck a bumping post, officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event recorder shows that the engineer tried applying emergency brakes less than one second before the crash, officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to the event recorder data the throttle position went from #4 to idle just prior to the collision, and then engineer-induced emergency braking occurred less than a second before the collision with the bumping post,\u201d the NTSB said.<\/span><\/p>\n

NJ Transit had said on Wednesday that it was changing its rules to require two rail employees to be in the front car of all trains as they enter the Hoboken station. The new rule, which takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, requires a conductor to join the engineer at the front of the train \u201cto focus exclusively on the railroad, calling signal, checking the route and ensuring that the train is operated safely in compliance with all rules and restrictions,\u201d according to an order obtained by The Record.<\/span><\/p>\n

Engineers typically focus on driving the train, while conductors are involved in duties related to passengers, like taking tickets. Under the new rules, one conductor will join the engineer after the train leaves the last station before the Hoboken Terminal. NJ Transit officials did not give a reason for the change when they acknowledged it on Wednesday, and it was unclear whether it was a response to preliminary findings by investigators.<\/span><\/p>\n

Video from a recorder at the front of the train showed it striking a post at the end of the Track 5 platform, according to the NTSB. The camera then recorded a \u201clarge flash\u201d when the cab car struck a panel in the station \u201cjust beyond the bumping post,\u201d the NTSB said. Audio recorders captured one blast of the train\u2019s horn about one minute before the accident, while the train was in a rail yard that leads to the terminal, and then the sound of a train bell that continued until the recording ended, the NTSB said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The NTSB said it had not determined the cause of the accident, and its news release did not contain an analysis of the information from the recorder and the video camera. It said that a panel of experts was scheduled to meet next week in Washington to go over information related to the accident. The investigation, the agency said, \u201cremains in the fact-finding stage\u201d and could take more than a year to complete.<\/span><\/p>\n
