But that hasn\u2019t stopped some people from trying it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; color: #000000;\">A new video published to YouTube\u00a0 GOOG -1.61% depicts YouTube user \u201cTechRax\u201d placing the iPhone 7 into a vice and getting out his 3.5mm drill bit. He then takes the bit to the iPhone 7 and drills a hole into the device. Best of all, the headphones fit into the hole he drilled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Since being published last week, the video has gone viral with nearly 10 million views.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; color: #000000;\">While the TechRax video demonstrates that the headphone hole he drilled does not actually work, it hasn\u2019t stopped several users from actually trying it out. In fact, the YouTube video is filled with comments from people who claim to have tried the technique\u2014only to discover that drilling a hole into the smartphone leaves it unusable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; color: #000000;\">\u201cHelp,\u201d one person wrote on the YouTube page on Sunday. \u201cNow my old headphones fit in but the phone doesn\u2019t work anymore!\u201d Several other comments evoke a similar tone, with one user complaining that the iPhone 7 is \u201cdead\u201d and wondering if it would require a long charge to come back on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Apple\u00a0 AAPL 0.15%\u00a0 made the controversial decision to offer an iPhone 7 without the headphone jack, making it the first Apple smartphone not to offer a place for users to plug in their wired headphones. Instead, Apple shipped iPhone 7 units with an adapter that lets users plug in tethered headphones through the Lightning port. Apple is also releasing wireless earbuds next month, called AirPods, that will wirelessly connect to the iPhone 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; color: #000000;\">While iPhone 7 demand appears strong despite the omission, some owners have criticized Apple\u2019s decision. Some of those people are apparently so concerned with the move that they would believe a joke video showing a person drilling a hole into the bottom of the iPhone 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Secret Hack To Get Headphone Jack on the iPhone 7\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5tqH-Un9SFU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; color: #000000;\">While TechRax\u2019s video posting doesn\u2019t suggest it\u2019s a joke\u2014the description says the video is \u201cfor those who don\u2019t want to get $159 wireless AirPods or have to insert your headphones into an adapter every time you listen to music\u201d\u2014his profile and set of videos suggest he has a long history of jokingly fiddling with technology. His profile, for instance, says he\u2019s been \u201csmashing technology since 2011.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Now, though, the joke has been taken seriously by iPhone 7 owners who are left with a very expensive brick that won\u2019t be covered under warranty.
