US Marine on life support after being shot in head while visiting family in Los Angeles<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

US Marine on life support after being shot in head while visiting family in Los Angeles<\/strong> : Authorities were searching for suspects Monday after a 19-year-old U.S. Marine who was on weekend leave was shot in the head in Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Police said Carlos Segovia was found slumped over in the driver\u2019s seat of his car in South Los Angeles on Friday and was unlikely to survive the shooting. Officer Norma Eisenman said a vehicle pulled up next to Segovia\u2019s car, and at least one person opened fire, striking him once in the head.<\/span><\/p>\n

Claudia Perez, a family friend, told the Los Angeles times that Segovia was visiting family and friends while on leave from Camp Pendleton near San Diego. Segovia had spent time with his girlfriend and was on his way to Perez’s home, where he usually stays while in Los Angeles, when he was struck by gunfire, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

“He texted my son that he was bringing pizza home. He never made it,” Perez said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Police notified the U.S. Marine Corps, which in turn notified Segovia’s family about the shooting. Los Angeles police Capt. Peter Whittingham said Segovia is unlikely to survive and had little to no brain function.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perez said Segovia is being kept on life support but acknowledged that the family will have to make a decision about ending medical care.<\/span><\/p>\n

“He’s fighting for his life,” she added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Segovia was not in uniform when he was shot. No suspects have been identified and investigators did not have a motive. Police said Segovia has no connections to gangs or other activity that would seem to make him a likely target of gun violence.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt this point, it\u2019s absolutely a mystery,\u201d Whittingham said. \u201cLike so many cases in South L.A., we have nothing to go on at this point.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Born in El Salvador, Segovia came to the U.S. with his mother. Both are U.S. citizens, Perez said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He joined the Marines about six months ago after finishing high school.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the LA Times, Segovia was known around his community for his service work and led a teen group that aimed to motivate high school students to finish classes and graduate.<\/span><\/p>\n
