Shailene Woodley: My Family Is \u2018Super F–ked Up\u2019<\/strong>: Family matters. Snowden star Shailene Woodley said in a new interview that her family is far from perfect, but that she wouldn\u2019t trade her nontraditional upbringing for the world because she also knows they would do \u201canything\u201d for her.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy family is super f–ked up in many ways, but they are also my everything,\u201d Woodley, 24, told Net-a-Porter\u2019s digital magazine, The Edit. They would do anything for me, and I would do anything for them. That\u2019s a lot more than most people can say about their families. I\u2019m grateful for the s–t that happened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Woodley\u2019s parents \u2014 her father is a psychologist and her mom is a counselor \u2014 taught both her and her brother to literally embrace conflict from an early age. When the siblings got into spats as kids, the actress\u2019 parents told them to hug it out for hours on the front lawn in front of the neighbors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole time you\u2019re just seething, you\u2019re disliking this person with so much energy, but if you let go you have to stay there for an extra hour,\u201d the Divergent star said. \u201cThat was the kind of reverse, manipulative psychology my parents were into!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAt school too, Woodley said her parents\u2019 message was clear: Learn to deal with the negativity by trying to understand the other person\u2019s perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd there were times in school, when someone said something really mean. It would hurt my feelings, and my parents weren\u2019t on my side. They would be like, \u2018I\u2019m so sorry you\u2019re feeling this way, but what do you think that person was feeling?\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cOh, I hated it. Now, of course, I understand; it enabled me to recognize that no one\u2019s evil, they\u2019re probably hurting and can\u2019t express themselves, get no love at home, so it\u2019s repeated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It gave me a broader outlook: just put yourself in another person\u2019s shoes,\u201d Woodley said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The actress will next star as Lindsay Mills, the girlfriend of NSA leaker Edward Snowden, who is played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, in the Oliver Stone\u2013helmed biopic Snowden.<\/span>
