iPhone 7 Butts Heads With Galaxy Note 7 For First Time: Does It Bode Well For Apple?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

iPhone 7 Butts Heads With Galaxy Note 7 For First Time: Does It Bode Well For Apple?<\/strong> : Is the iPhone 7 a match for the tech-heavy Note 7 and Galaxy S7? And is that even the right question? Read on.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bad news is that Apple AAPL -2.23% failed to impress a few high-profile Wall Street analysts and journalists doing hands-on first takes of the iPhone 7. The good news is that the iPhone 7 appears to deliver on what matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only do I believe that but my check with select analysts confirmed this \u201cgood enough\u201d take. \u201cWhen it comes to the features and internals, they\u2019ve done enough of an upgrade to warrant the iPhone 7 name,\u201d IDC analyst Jitesh Ubrani told me over the phone. In other words, it appears to be more than a new and improved iPhone 6s, a common complaint due to the 7\u2032s physical likeness to the 6\/6s.<\/span><\/p>\n

And most of the research notes that hit my inbox this past week say the iPhone 7 appears positioned for success. For example, Morgan Stanley MS -1.40% analyst Katy Huberty sees the iPhone 7 as a positive for Apple, citing, among other things, the improved battery life of the iPhone 7 (additional 2 hours) and 7 Plus (1 hour) over the 6s and 6s Plus, respectively. \u201cBattery life is the biggest complaint from respondents in our global smartphone survey this past June, and any improvement could drive more users to refresh their iPhones,\u201d Huberty wrote in a research note to clients this past week.<\/span><\/p>\n

IHS IHS +% Technology said new specs like the camera upgrade will \u201csuccessfully convince consumers to upgrade their older iPhones\u201d \u2014 despite the \u201crisk\u201d that Apple is taking with the same design as the two-year-old iPhone 6. (And if preorders are any indication, the Jet Black finish iPhone 7 is already doing well.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Stacking it up against the Galaxy S7 Edge\/Note 7<\/span><\/p>\n

Reviews invariably compare the latest iPhone to the latest Galaxy S. And most reviews gushed about the Galaxy Note 7 and Edge 7, citing the cutting-edge physical design based on a curved OLED display (which Samsung continues to refine), a great camera, better battery life, and an improved Android experience. And bling like an iris scanner and VR gear was icing on the cake.<\/span><\/p>\n

But what about the average (non-geek) consumer? As I\u2019ve argued before, smartphone buyers focus on things like battery life (see previous survey results), more storage, better camera, faster performance, and, more recently, waterproofing. And Apple appears to have improved all of those with the iPhone 7, while adding extras like a dual camera lens (Plus), better display, stereo speakers, and the option for AirPods. Do those extras upstage the Galaxy\u2019s iris scanner and curved display? We\u2019ll have to wait for reviews to find out.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bigger point is, as long as Apple doesn\u2019t screw up what makes the iPhone successful \u2014 i.e., build quality combined with well-integrated hardware and software \u2013 the doom and gloom will never stick. Not to mention the popularity of the iOS\/apps ecosystem. (Apple shipped over 230 million iPhones in 2015, second only to Samsung, according to IDC.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn\u2019t mention the (predictable) rants about the removal of the headphone jack. But can anyone remember what happened when Apple ditched the optical drive on the MacBook? I didn\u2019t think so.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, yes, Samsung has Apple beat on flashy specs on the Note 7 (now under the cloud of a recall and dire warnings from Samsung, by the way) and S7 Edge but I\u2019m going to predict decent sales numbers for the iPhone 7, even with a predicted downturn for most major smartphone makers in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n
