Clinton, Trump pay tribute to victims of 9\/11<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Clinton, Trump pay tribute to victims of 9\/11<\/strong>: Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump paid tribute Sunday to the victims and survivors of 9\/11, and also played a little election-year politics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clinton, in a CNN interview, said “we have to protect our country by working with one another and that most certainly includes the Muslim-American community,” but Trump “has made our job harder” with various comments and a proposal to ban Muslim entry into the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Donald Trump has said it’s a war between us and them,” the former secretary of State told CNN’s State of the Union, but “the loose talk and the bombastic commentary” will not defeat terrorism.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump did not mention Clinton in a written statement on the 15th anniversary of the 9\/11 attacks, calling it “a day of sadness and remembrance” for all Americans.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It is also a day of resolve,” Trump added, and the United States must work to prevent another attack by the kinds of “radical Islamic terrorists” who murdered Americans a decade-and-a-half ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Our solemn duty on behalf of all those who perished that September day 15 years ago, is to work together as one nation to keep all of our people safe from an enemy that seeks nothing less than to destroy our way of life,” Trump said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The presidential candidates did not schedule campaign events on Sunday; they both attended a 9\/11 memorial service in New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n

In their various comments, the two candidates praised the victims and survivors of the nation’s worst terrorist attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We pray for those who have lost the ones they love so much, and we also pray for the unity we will need to conquer all the challenges to come,” Trump said in his written statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump said “we will never forget” the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Republican presidential nominee praised the first responders to the attack<\/span>, and paid special tribute to the passengers of United Flight 93 who forced the crash of that hijacked plane in Pennsylvania as it headed toward Washington.<\/span><\/p>\n

They “saved countless more from a terrible fate,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

In her CNN interview, Clinton \u2014 a senator from New York at the time \u2014 recounted her post-9\/11 work that ranged from a federal compensation fund to <\/span>health care for residents and responders made sick by the poor air quality after the attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It did become very personal for me,” Clinton said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clinton said the nation needs “a candid, honest conversation about what we face” in the future, not only against threats from the Islamic State but “a violent ideology” that that tries to inspire attacks via the Internet.<\/span><\/p>\n

On social media, Clinton tweeted: “We’ll never forget the horror of September 11, 2001. Today, let’s honor the lives and tremendous spirit of the victims and responders. -H”<\/span><\/p>\n
