The social network is going to show you ads anyway by changing the way it delivers them to its desktop site to circumvent ad-blocking software, reports CMO Today. As one Facebook executive put it bluntly, “Facebook is ad-supported. Ads are a part of the Facebook experience; they’re not a tack on.” While many in the ad business may applaud Facebook’s tough approach, others will surely think it’s crazy to get into a technical arms race with ad-blocking software companies. Adblock Plus, the most popular ad blocker, accused Facebook of taking a “dark path against user choice.” Meanwhile, P&G, the world’s biggest ad spender, said it’s cutting back on targeted advertising on Facebook after realizing it had zeroed in on consumers too narrowly based on demographics, The Wall Street Journal reports. P&G said it won’t reduce its spending with the site. Facebook can also deliver scale, helping the consumer products giant efficiently reach a wide audience that rivals television, particularly with the social network’s heavy investment in video.

FACEBOOK RESISTANCE: As Facebook pumps money and resources into building out video on its platform, particularly live streaming, some big media companies are balking at getting on board. The National Football League, Walt Disney Co. and Comcast Corp. ’s NBCUniversal are among TV content owners that have avoided striking video distribution deals with Facebook because they don’t want to undermine the value of their content or lose control over it, reports The Wall Street Journal. One big sticking point is that these companies want to use their own ad sales forces to sell the ads alongside their videos—what they see as premium content—and that is something Facebook won’t allow. Also, the content producers don’t love being at the mercy of a mysterious algorithm that will potentially give their videos the same treatment as user-generated content. For now, Facebook is urging patience, as it figures out how to balance the needs of so many creators and its billion-plus users.

CORD SIMMER: For all the hand-wringing over cord-cutting and fears of pressure from pay-TV providers after a recent spate of acquisitions, there has been little evidence of any significant financial pain among cable channel owners. At Scripps Networks Interactive, the bigger concern of late has been over advertising sales growth. But when the owner of Food Network and HGTV reported earnings Tuesday, a startling decline in affiliate fee revenue overshadowed a better-than-expected 8.9% jump in domestic ad sales. In fact, Scripps’s distribution revenue dipped 3.6% in the second quarter, marking the company’s first quarterly drop in affiliate fees, reports WSJ. That was driven by Scripps losing subscribers and, in particular, one of the bigger (unnamed) cable distributors tightening the screws on fees after consolidation among pay-TV providers. Meanwhile, the pay-TV industry lost a collective 757,000 subscribers during the second quarter, according to analyst Craig Moffett, reports Variety.

ESPN NO ACCESS: Walt Disney Co. announced two big moves during its earnings call Tuesday, neither of which will shock media junkies but are nonetheless significant to the future of the business. First off, Disney made it official: The entertainment giant will shell out $1 billion to acquire a 33% stake in BAMTech, the streaming media unit created by Major League Baseball that powers web video for the likes of WWE and HBO, reports WSJ. Second, Disney announced that later this year ESPN will launch a direct-to-consumer streaming product. But don’t get too excited; this isn’t the kill-the-bundle move people have been hoping for or fearing. The new product won’t include the big sports that ESPN airs on TV and will instead be more of a niche service. While the deal is hardly a total game-changer, at least for now, it is a step in the direction of a more digital future after ESPN lost about 3.7 million cable subscribers in the past year.
Elsewhere

FX Networks CEO John Landgraf, who has warned about the sheer volume of scripted TV shows on the air, told TV critics he expects the industry to now hit peak supply by 2019.
