Gunfire Reported at Michael Brown Slay Anniversary March<\/strong>: Gunfire was reported Tuesday night in Ferguson, Mo., during a protest march on the second anniversary of the fatal police shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown, authorities told NBC News.<\/span><\/p>\n

The confrontation came after a police officer ordered a small group of protesters to clear the street as they marched downtown from the site of Brown’s shooting on Aug. 9, 2014, The Associated Press reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeff Small, a spokesman for the city, told NBC News that police responded to reports of gunfire and of a pedestrian’s having been struck by a car, but he said neither report had been confirmed. <\/span><\/p>\n

Several journalists covering the march echoed the accounts in social media posts from the scene Tuesday night.<\/span>
\n<\/a><\/p>\n

Observances earlier in the day had been peaceful as prominent members of the Black Lives Matter movement and the Michael Brown Chosen for Change charitable foundation organized a vigil with music and poetry readings. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Brown was shot and killed by a white Ferguson police officer, leading to weeks of sometimes-violent protests. The officer, who resigned, was cleared by a state grand jury and the U.S. Justice Department, but the shooting led to a consent decree governing the Ferguson Police Department.<\/span><\/p>\n

Antonio French, a St. Louis city alderman who emerged as a prominent spokesman for peaceful protesters in Ferguson, said Brown’s death had not yet brought sufficient reform to what he called an unequal criminal justice system. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0French told NBC News that as long as police officers carried on being “unaccountable for their actions,” deep mistrust would remain between police and their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

“There are Fergusons everywhere,” French said. “There are many powder kegs all across America that could explode at any minute.” <\/span><\/p>\n
