Clinton Tries To Clarify Email Comments :\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Hillary Clinton Tries to Clarify Her E-Mail Comments<\/strong> and widely disputed claim that the FBI director had declared her statements on her email scandal \u201ctruthful\u201d \u2013 but may have ended up adding to the confusion, delivering a lengthy and at-times conflicting explanation that the Donald Trump campaign later called \u201cpretzel-like.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Democratic presidential candidate addressed the controversy when she fielded questions from reporters with the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.<\/span><\/p>\n

She was asked early on about her statement, on \u201cFox News Sunday,\u201d that FBI Director James Comey had affirmed her answers on her email controversy \u201cwere truthful and what I’ve said is consistent with what I have told the American people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Fact-checkers have roundly slammed that claim, noting that\u2019s not exactly what Comey said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clinton, however, seemed to stand by her comments on Friday, saying she was referring to her answers in her FBI interview — while also acknowledging she may have \u201cshort-circuited\u201d her explanation.<\/span><\/p>\n

In her clarification, though, Clinton gave a difficult-to-follow response. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have said \u2026 that what I told the FBI, which he said was truthful, is consistent with what I have said publicly,\u201d Clinton said. <\/span><\/p>\n

She added: \u201cHaving him say that my answers to the FBI were truthful \u2013 and that I should quickly add what I said was consistent with what I had said publicly, and that\u2019s really in my view trying to tie both ends together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This new explanation drew jeers from Republicans.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cClinton knows the actions she has taken are disqualifying for someone wishing to become Commander-in-Chief, and that is why today\u2019s painful, pretzel-like response to a simple question about her illegal server was obvious to everyone watching,\u201d Jason Miller, Trump senior communications adviser, said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said, \u201cJudging from the way Hillary Clinton kept lying at today\u2019s event, it\u2019s not hard to see why she hasn\u2019t held a press conference in 244 days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Priebus accused Clinton of \u201cyet again falsely claiming that what Director Comey said at his press conference is consistent with what she told the American people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Comey did say last month the bureau had \u201cno basis to conclude she lied to the FBI.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the FBI director did not say the same about her statements to the American public. <\/span><\/p>\n

And during testimony before a House committee, Comey said it was \u201cnot true\u201d that nothing Clinton sent or received was marked classified. To the contrary, he said, \u201cthere was classified material emailed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After Clinton\u2019s initial statement to \u201cFox News Sunday\u201d \u2013 which she repeated later in the week \u2013 fact-checkers piled on. The Washington Post awarded her \u201cfour Pinnochios.\u201d PolitiFact gave her a \u201cPants on Fire\u201d rating. FactCheck.org declared her claims \u201cfalse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On Friday, however, Clinton challenged the claims on the classified markings. As her campaign has argued before, she noted Comey has acknowledged the markings themselves were not properly marked. The State Department also has suggested those markings shouldn\u2019t have been there, which Clinton mentioned Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n

She repeated: \u201cI never sent or received anything that was marked classified.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Comey, though, also challenged other statements by Clinton during his testimony last month. On her claim that she used one device, Comey said, \u201cShe used multiple devices.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Clinton offered conflicting statements on that point Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the top of her answer, she said that using two emails accounts was a \u201cmistake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But at the end, she said: \u201cI will go back to where I started. I regret using one account.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
