Apple to offer up to $200K for security bugs<\/strong>: LAS VEGAS \u2014 Apple announced its first-ever bug bounty program Thursday, offering computer security researchers up to $200,000 for each software bug they find that makes Apple products less secure.<\/span><\/p>\n

The offer was presented at Black Hat, a large computer security conference, where the audience burst into applause when Ivan Krsti\u0107, head of Apple Security Engineering and Architecture, flashed a slide with the announcement on the screen.<\/span><\/p>\n

So-called bug bounties are common with large tech companies but Apple has been one of the rare companies that doesn\u2019t offer them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The announcement comes just four months after Apple engaged in a very public and acrimonious struggle with the FBI over the agency\u2019s demand that it aid the company in its attempts to get into the iPhone 5 used by San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook.<\/span><\/p>\n

The FBI case was withdrawn on March 28 when the agency announced it had paid an outside individual $1 million to gain access to the phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Krsti\u0107 would not comment on whether there are a link behind Apple finally offering a bug bounty and the FBI case.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m an engineer, I\u2019m happy to answer technical questions about what I\u2019ve covered today,\u201d he said to laughter from the nearly-full ballroom where the presentation was held.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bounty program will begin Sept. 1 and offers payments of $50,000 to $200,000 depending on the severity of the bug discovered.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe feedback we\u2019ve been hearing pretty consistently for some time now is the difficulty of finding these vulnerabilities has been going up and up,” Krsti\u0107 said. “The difficulty of finding these now is that we want to reward the people who spend the time and effort and frankly, creativity, finding these vulnerabilities.”<\/span><\/p>\n
