ZMA vs. GABA: Why the Difference Is Important
 
There are available supplements for both gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and zinc magnesium aspartate (ZMA). Both supplements are taken by consumers for different reasons but only some really work. Although these minerals and specific acids have a special role in our body functions, the use of these supplemental forms requires proper awareness about mineral deficiencies or must know the consequences and problems after proper diagnosis is taken. It is necessary to consult your physician first before using any GABA and ZMA supplements.What is Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid?
 
 
GABA is an amino acid naturally produced by the body but can be taken in supplement form. It acts as a neurotransmitter meaning this is a specific acid responsible for the transmission of impulses in the brain and in the nervous system. However, such functions of GABA are inhibitory because it restrains binding agents to allow the greater flow of other elements like chloride. The effect of this is that it enhances the stimulation of different parts of the central nervous system and the pituitary gland. According to a study which was published in “Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise” in 2008, the stimulation of the pituitary gland can lead to an increase in growth hormone production.What are the Effects of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid?GABA, according to a study which was published in “Current Opinion in Pharmacology” in 2006 is said to have a small effect as a relaxant and is capable of providing anti-anxiety effects.
 
 However, these effects cannot be used as a replacement for any treatment that is done by a certified or licensed physician and takes note also that this cannot be used on behalf of a prescribed medication. There are also other reported effects of a gamma-anti butyric acid such as it increases strength and it is being used as a pre-work out stimulants by bodybuilders and it is said to enhance recovery after exercising. But there are no enough evidence yet for such claims.What is Zinc Magnesium Aspartate?
 
 
ZMA is a combination of two minerals, the zinc, and magnesium, and this contains vitamin B6 also. Eating a balanced diet can provide you sufficient amount of zinc and B6. However, magnesium can be present or not in your diet. This depends on the dietary composition. If your diet includes leafy greens then you can be sure that you have enough magnesium but if leafy greens are not included in your diet then you are deficient in magnesium. The elements in ZMA have nothing to do with neurotransmitters.What are the Effects of Zinc Magnesium Aspartate?
 
 
ZMA is being purchased as a bodybuilding supplement as the maker of the original ZMA claimed that this increases testosterone. This is supported by a study which was published in the “Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition” in the year 2004 as it was mentioned in there that ZMA supplementation has nothing to do with the increase of testosterone. Another study was again conducted and was published in “European Journal of Clinical Nutrition” in 2007 and again they concluded that ZMA does not have any effect on the increase of testosterone among the participants. There is no evidence that supports the use of ZMA for other purposes other than being a mineral supplement.
 
 
GABA and ZMA are two different supplements. Taking one in combination with the other may be harmful to your health. It is then bested to ask for expert advice should you plan on taking both.
